Hi all, Our current Call Manager 4.x servers are creaking under their age, and we are looking at replacing this either with a new Cisco telephony system or a completely new system altogether. The system has to use IP as the connection to the handsets, as we don't want to add in more cables. Has anyone any experience in deploying a new Call manager setup, or a similar telephony system, and how was the accessibility? Thanks. Andrew.

let's talk Backup Exec

Hey everyone: I just got a promotion at work, and with the goodness of a promotion comes more responsibilities. I'm now in charge of our backup infrastructure. We run Backup Exec 12.5, and have 16 or so media servers in various branch offices around the world. While Backup Exec used to be very accessible, over the last two versions accessibility seems to have gone into something of a decline, I already use scripts just to read the main table of jobs, and might need more just to get around the scheduling window so I can actually schedule a job. I'd consider the rest of the program accessible but clunky, tabbing doesn't always bring you where you think it will, on some screens tab order seems to be dynamic. Backup Exec also has an odd way of bringing up alert windows and grabbing your focus, even when you tell it specifically not to. While clunkyness is OK on one server, when you have fifteen individual servers to manage and no way to do it in a centralized fashion clunkyness is less acceptable. This is also less than a quarter of my new responsibilities as well. The current admin has the remote desktop console setup with all the Backup Exec servers in his favorites, stays logged into each server with a Backup Exec window open, and flicks from screen to screen and can easily glance at the output from each job. For us screen reader users, that doesn't work well. I've already got e-mail alerts set up and am using some Outlook rules to sort failure jobs out from successes, but was wondering if there's anything else I can be doing? I'd think people in really large environments with hundreds of media servers aren't logging into each server on a daily basis, so there has to be better ways to handle this. Any ideas? Thanks. Ryan

This is a frequently asked question on linux lists. It usually generates quite a bit of debate because the military doesn't usually tell people what they can do so you can only speculate on what it would take to destroy the data so that even the military can't recover it. Certainly, if you destroy the platter physically by doing something like hitting it with a hammer, that should do it. But most people believe that just wiping the disk a dozen or so times will do it. You can do that with the dd command lie this: Dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda Thats if your disk is a sata drive. For IDE drives, the command would be: Dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/had Those commands write random digits over the entire drive, wiping out the boot sector, partition table, and all data. does anyone know how to share a wireless connection with ethernet on Windows

Hi, Is it possible to take a wireless WiFi connection under windows XP Pro and share it with the included ethernet port? Never done this on windows. Any ideas how to set up a nat type thing? Thanks Scott

Accessibility of desktop virtualisation (VDI)

Hi, Just wondered if anyone has come across desktop virtualisation? This is where the client logs on using RDP (through a thin client), and once they enter in their username and password, they are given their own desktop image, which is manipulated through the thin client. Products which currently are doing this include Vmware Ace - http://www.vmware.com/products/ace and Citrix Xen Desktop http://www.citrix.com/xendesktop4 These products are replacing the traditional terminal services/Citrix Presentation server model for regular thin client users in for example call centres and secure environments. I was looking at these products last week at a reference site, and so far as I can tell, we lose the virtual channel between the remote desktop and the machine, because the RDP connection is going through the virtual desktop server, which gives the user access to the correct image. There seems to be strong sound support however, so we could get at the system that way. There are also agents that can be deployed on the machine connecting to the desktop server, that facilitates higher graphics support and other features. Client can't see access point

Hey all. I've got an interesting issue for everyone - hopefully someone might have some idea as to whats going on here? I have a laptop with an intel wifi card, I think it's a pro 2100. No matter what I try, I can't get it to see my access point. Things I've tried: Set both devices to work with both 11b&g at the same time, even though there both g Tried setting them both to g only. Other clients can connect to the ap fine and the card can connect to other networks without any problems. Tried updating drivers. A channel change didn't do anything. I entered the info for my network manually in windows but it still didn't connect. Signal isn't an issue - I've searched for my network in different rooms both near and not so near to the ap. I really don't get what's going on here, I thought I was fairly good at wlan related stuff but this doesn't appear to be the case. I've scene instanses where the card will try and connect then fail, but in this situation it can't even see my ssid. If anyone has any ideas or they've spotted something that I could be doing wrong, I'd be really interested in hearing them. Chears, Ben.

VM Fusion

Is anyone using the following? http://store.vmware.com/store/vmware/pd/productID.165310200/Currency.USD/?s… I've read I think it was on the myaxess list but might have been here as well that VM Fusion was the way to go over Parallels. I dig VM Ware so wanted to know whether I should give this a crack or not. Any pointers would be appreciated.
