vmware book on bookshare?

This is kind of OT but a few weeks ago, I asked about acquiring a book on vmware. Somebody said that all the safari books are on bookshare. I can't find it but I am thinking that it may be because I am not a paid member yet. But before I pay, I'd like to confirm that the book will be there. Is bookshare.org worth it anyway? Are all of the safari books there? Are copyrighted books hidden from searches until you pay?

In case anyone is interested in this... I have not solved the problem I was asking about earlier this week. However, I've narrowed it todwn to a point where I have figured out I can ignore it. Well, sort of. The main symptom is that periodically, my Windows machine gets aninvalid DNS suffix search list. Instead of 'math.wisc.edu' it's 'bogus.wisc.edu' where 'bogus' is the name of the IT department on campus. This means that if I am using ssh, I have to give the fully qualified domain name. I can't say 'ssh lambeau'. I have to say 'ssh lambeau.math.wisc.edu'. Also, the list of DNS servers is wrong. It's for the other department. For a while, I thought there was a rogue dhcp server on my network. But it puzzled me because my IP address was correct. If there was a rogue dhcp server, it was kind enough to hand out correct IP addresses. I eliminated the possibility of the rogue dhcp server by shutting down the dhcp service on my real dhcp servers. Then when I tried to renew my lease, it failed. Actually, it was kind of funny, at this point I had no network connection on my PC so I had to get my co-worker to restart dhcp. My boss drew an analogy with cutting off a branch you're sitting on. Anyway, at this point, I still don't know why the DNS suffix search list and the list of DNS servers gets messed up. According to the people in the IT department, dhcp broadcasts can't leave the subnet. But I know it happens only with Windows machines and only when a lease expires. And it can be easily fixed by issuing an 'ipconfig /renew'. setting Primary Dns Suffix via samba

There is something wrong with my samba domain. The main symptom is that after a DHCP lease expires, I get an invalid DNS suffix search list. It should be "math.wisc.edu" but it gets set to another department like "junk.wisc.edu". If I renew the lease, 'ipconfig /renew', it's right. However, the Primary Dns Suffix is always empty. I'm not finding anything on samba.org on how to set that. I know it can be hard coded in via the Windows control panel. But I don't want to have to fix that on all 200 computers that we have in our department. Most of them are booted into linux most of the time anyway. So how to I configure samba to set the Primary Dns Suffix for Windows and how do I stop it from changing the DNS suffix search list?

vista, jfw, and vmware server

Hello, Is anyone running this combo? I've got an xp host which is running the latest version of vmware server 1.07 and windows vista ultimate with sp1. The vista vm seemed stable until i put jfw 9.0.2169 on it. Now whenever i try to do something with jfw, the system blue screens on me and crashes. I'm suspecting this has something to do with either the video intercept, vista complained that that publisher could not be verified or that there's a vista theme or display setting that needs to be changed. The machine is running with whatever the default theme is. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Dave.

custom administrative office installation

Hi everybody, could I do a custom administrative installation of Microsoft Word? Of the applications in the office suite I only use word, but when I tried to do a custom administrative installation it didn't give me the option, as it had when I did a standard installation. All I got was the install button. Hope someone can help, John.

Vmware - copy an image to a safe place

At the time I had mentioned my company was looking at going with SanMelody. We've decided not to go that route afterall, not that there's anything wrong with SanMelody, we've just found something that might meet our needs even better. We're still waiting for upper management approval, but it looks like we're going with the Storage Director Z300 from PogoLinux http://www.pogolinux.com/bomquotes/webbom?system=133 It seems like a pretty neat device, the underlying storage technology is Sun's ZFS, and as a result there is no hardware RAID on the box. I don't know too much about ZFS yet, but I'm made to understand ZFS handles the RAID on its own without any hardware controllers. We'll be using this device as an ISCSI target mainly for our ESX servers, but also our SQL server and a couple other Windows Server 2003 machines. I've been able to play with the interface and its very accessible. In adition to the web interface, there are two command lines, one provided by the appliance's OS and a regular Unix BASH shell. And the price is right too, we're getting a 9TB unit and full onsite support for under $13000. From what I've seen you can't beat that in the SAN world. I'll let you know how this works once we get the unit installed, but in the mean time I wanted to point anyone looking for cheap storage this way as something to think about. Ryan

vmware server and accessing shares on a host

Hello, I've got vmware server running on an xp professional machine. One of my vm's is also running xp professional, it's in bridged networking mode. >From the vm when i atempt to access the network fileserver as in \\servername i am immediately prompted for authentication credentials and all is good. I've got a share on the host system as \\hostsystem\share for illustrative purposes and i atempt to access it via unc naming as i do with the network fileserver. Unlike the network fileserver access is not prompted for quickly, it takes almost a minute before i am asked for login information. Any additional information needed let me know, any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Dave.
