Client can't see access point

Hey all. I've got an interesting issue for everyone - hopefully someone might have some idea as to whats going on here? I have a laptop with an intel wifi card, I think it's a pro 2100. No matter what I try, I can't get it to see my access point. Things I've tried: Set both devices to work with both 11b&g at the same time, even though there both g Tried setting them both to g only. Other clients can connect to the ap fine and the card can connect to other networks without any problems. Tried updating drivers. A channel change didn't do anything. I entered the info for my network manually in windows but it still didn't connect. Signal isn't an issue - I've searched for my network in different rooms both near and not so near to the ap. I really don't get what's going on here, I thought I was fairly good at wlan related stuff but this doesn't appear to be the case. I've scene instanses where the card will try and connect then fail, but in this situation it can't even see my ssid. If anyone has any ideas or they've spotted something that I could be doing wrong, I'd be really interested in hearing them. Chears, Ben.

VM Fusion

Is anyone using the following? http://store.vmware.com/store/vmware/pd/productID.165310200/Currency.USD/?s… I've read I think it was on the myaxess list but might have been here as well that VM Fusion was the way to go over Parallels. I dig VM Ware so wanted to know whether I should give this a crack or not. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Take a look at the HP MSA. The web admin is useless cause it refreshes all the time, but you can ssh in and use a CLI. 2010 IAVIT Convention

All, The first ever convention of the International Association of Visually Impaired Technologists will be held on the weekend of October 22 - 24, 2010 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The convention will be hheld in conjunction with the 2010 Vision Midwest Conference in Madison. I will be moderating an open discussion at the Vision Midwest Conference about the greatest technical challenges facing blind technologists today. So far, this is the only official IAVIT event scheduled. But there will be many other events of interest to blind technologists scheduled through Vision Midwest. A list of the presenters at the conference is below. Note that the list of events is quite extensive and includes everything from a talk by Dr. Greg Vanderheiden of the University of Wisconsin Department of Engineering Trace Center to a talk on beer making. accidental discovery

I use open ssh for windows to admin our linux servers. Openssh runs in a windows command window like Windows DOS. But I always had problems with it when running a curses program like the linux kernel config program or debconf. But I accidently discovered last night that nvda works really well in a command window in full screen mode. Jaws doesn't work at all in a command window in full screen mode. But nvda works really well. You don't have to have openssh to try it yourself. Start nvda, open a command window and pressalt+enter. That will put the command window in full screen mode. You'll still be able to hear nvda. If you try it with jaws (at least as of jaws 9), all you'll get is the key echo. When I discovered this last night, I sshed to my linux server at home and went into the kernel configuration program. It was pretty nice. Then I reconfigured exim4 via debconf. So it worked really well. Best Windows terminal emulation I'm aware of. And free too, of course.

Juniper V. Cisco

Any one else finding the gear coming out of Juniper more interesting than Cisco lately or actually for a while? I'm working on a big migration from Cisco / Foundry to Juniper and the Junos side is so much more flexable. I like the whole BSD vibe on the Juniper gear. They have really good version control for example and you can tell that's all based on a subversion back end with a wrapper. Recovering a corrupted OS is all about mount_msdosfs /dev/das1, copy your image to the temp directory and then add / reboot, bam! It's very clean and familiar some how. I guess I like products that use Unix environments as their OS, Checkpoint on Solaris was another example. I also like the fact that a gigabit interface for example can pass a gigabit's worth of normal traffic instead of say 300 megabits like your average Cisco product. Anyone else having a similar experience? What are other vendors doing interesting things. How are the Juniper security products? I will say I do like the Cisco ASA 5500 series. The whole group construction and policy / tunnel phase 1 / 2 thing is clever. I'm not inspired by what Cisco is doing in routing and switching though. Any other vendors that should be considered?

Anybody have a recommendation for a free sshfs program fro Windows? I personally use ExpandDrive and consider it worth every penny of the registration cost. However, I'm writing a howto for my department and I know some people will not want to pay.

So I'm do for a laptop refresh at work and they have decided to give me the option of a new I7 Mac. Is Voice Over ready for the job site? How does it work with things like ssh, rt tracker via http, and what about this windows under parallels thing? I keep hearing about VM fusion. Anyone who could give me a primer I'd really appreciate it. What's the ideal configuration I should shoot for? Thank you Scott

vmware workstation 6.5

All, I know this is a long shot but is anyone still using vmware 6.5 for linux? I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.6.32 and now I can't get the vmware monitor kernel module to compile. I'm looking for hints & tips as to how to figure out why it won't compile. I've looked in the logs in /tmp but there doesn't seem to be any error messages there. I presume there are error messages on screen but I can't see them and orca won't read them because the compile is run as root. I know from past experience that instead of running vmware as a regular user and giving it the root password to compile, you can instead open a terminal window and run vmware as root. It then starts compiling the modules and you get access to the compiler messages. I did that and it seemed to work. Only when I run vmware, it still wants to compile and install the vmmon module. Vmware still runs and I have even created a virtual machine (I think). But the machine won't run without the vmmon module. You can open a gnome terminal window and type 'su

Off Line storage

all. I wish to set up a off line Linux server that I can manage that has a higher band width than what I can get normally. This will permit me to store files remotely and provide access to family/friends so we can share photo's and family material. So I am looking for something that is cheap. If I hav to provide the hard disks, that is fine. If I have to provide the PC. well, I can do that but it is going to be more difficult. If it is all virtual, that is fine. I want to have a SSH logging to this box. Any ideas? Sean

u3 smart drive

Hello, I've got a new sandisk u3 smart flash drive. I'm trying to install u3 compatible programs on it, but they're not installing. When i initially plugged in the drive u3 was not on there, i had to download the u3 software, run it and now it's showing up. This drive also came with password encryption, which i'm also not seeing. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Dave.

Yeah, you make a good point. One of the first things somebody said to me after we'd settled on the name, International Association of Visually Impaired Technologists, was, "Why are you limiting it to just visually impaired people?" Well, I guess mostly because it didn't occur to me to include people with other disabilities. Doh! But I decided it was better this way because blind people have such specific needs when it comes to dealing with computers. You can't be all things to all people. But I would be willing to work with someone starting a more encompassing group. The final point I should make is that IAVIT is not a civil rights group. Legally, we're not set up that way and I personally have no interest in suing anybody. I want to work with companies to create technical solutions to access problems.I see IAVIT more like the W3C than like the NFB. Not that there is anything wrong with the NFB's approach. Hello all. I know this isn't exactly sys admin related but I'm posting it here since I'm guessing that some of you may have done this before and also because people on this list are very knoligeable. I'm getting tired of posting to other lists / forums where a topic gets hyjacked completely by someone who clearly can't help me with my question but still sees fit to ask something that could easily be googled. Anyway, rant over, here we go. I do a fair bit of selling on ebay - mainly hardware that I don't need anymore with the odd computer every now and again that I've made out of parts that I have. I'm wanting to become more active on ebay which has made me think a bit more about the look of my listings. In other words, I'm wanting to make my descriptions more ahem...pretty. At the moment, I write the description with a little bit of html for new lines and paragraphs but that's about all. I've been told that this looks unprofessional in comparison to other peoples descriptions and I'm worried that this will effect the price that my items sell for. I'm wondering how other blind people who list on ebay make there auctions look visually appealing? For a computer for example, I usually have a quick spec at the top, then a bunch of stuff about why people should buy from me instead of someone else, then a couple of suggested uses for the box along with a more extencive spec. At the bottom I have all my terms. Is there a program or website that has some templates where I can copy & paste all the stuff in that will make my descriptions look better than they do at the moment? Again, I'm sorry for bringing this question to the list, but I've consistantly got really helpfull answers from people on here when I've had questions. Any pointers at all would be very welcome. All. I am seeking for people in any country who are I.T professionals or wish to join the ranks to get in contact with myself. The goal here is to establish a network of people to identify common barriers and how we can help others to get into the I.t. industry or advance in their current career. Such as barriers in certifications. Access to books. Employer programs to employ disable people. Development of resources outlining accessibility of products. Etc. This is not focusing on the Blind but all disable people. In the world wide networking industry, the large networking vendors/providers relise there is a shortage of people with talent in this area. If this is the case here, then where else in I.t. So at this stage I am collecting resource material, contacts from other disability groups and names to bounce ideas off. To try and get more disable people employed. Sean

gdm3 startup sound

Anybody know how to make gdm3 make some kind of sound when it starts? Previous versions of gdm would beep when the login sscreen appeared. YYou could also make it play a sound file like the ubuntu drums when gdm started up. But I configured gdm3 the same way as I did my previous gdm version and it won't play the sound file. You used to be able to get it to play a sound file by editing /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and adding these lines to the [greeter] section: SoundOnLogin=true SoundOnLoginFile=/etc/gdm/welcome.wav

hello my friends: I'm in a great problem, I've computer office, we put all data on a hard disk, and we not take back-up from some times, after restore windows from ghost on C partition, D )all data( become unreadable, each time click give me format the disk yes/no... even on dos not read it. please which tool can I use to not format fix file system or at least copy data to another disk.. its sata hard disk D size is 100 gb.. please help me as quick as possible.. thanks very much.. ibraam

let's talk Backup Exec

Hey everyone: I just got a promotion at work, and with the goodness of a promotion comes more responsibilities. I'm now in charge of our backup infrastructure. We run Backup Exec 12.5, and have 16 or so media servers in various branch offices around the world. While Backup Exec used to be very accessible, over the last two versions accessibility seems to have gone into something of a decline, I already use scripts just to read the main table of jobs, and might need more just to get around the scheduling window so I can actually schedule a job. I'd consider the rest of the program accessible but clunky, tabbing doesn't always bring you where you think it will, on some screens tab order seems to be dynamic. Backup Exec also has an odd way of bringing up alert windows and grabbing your focus, even when you tell it specifically not to. While clunkyness is OK on one server, when you have fifteen individual servers to manage and no way to do it in a centralized fashion clunkyness is less acceptable. This is also less than a quarter of my new responsibilities as well. The current admin has the remote desktop console setup with all the Backup Exec servers in his favorites, stays logged into each server with a Backup Exec window open, and flicks from screen to screen and can easily glance at the output from each job. For us screen reader users, that doesn't work well. I've already got e-mail alerts set up and am using some Outlook rules to sort failure jobs out from successes, but was wondering if there's anything else I can be doing? I'd think people in really large environments with hundreds of media servers aren't logging into each server on a daily basis, so there has to be better ways to handle this. Any ideas? Thanks. Ryan

Problems with ping on win7

Hello there. I need some help with solving the problem with ping on my win 7 machine at home. I just found out that by default ping doesn't work on win7 and that windows firewall has to be reconfigured by creating new rule which would accept icmp. I created new rule with the following settings: rule type, custom, allowed connection yes, access from and to any ip address yes, under protocol tipe i selected icmpv4 and under settings, i selected specific icmp tipes, where i checked the box which says, echo requests. However after applying the rule , nothing changed and ping can not be acomplished successfully. Oh btw, the machine goes out thru thompson 780 w router, with its firewall turned off. any suggestions?
