Hi all: A few weeks ago I asked about the accessibility of SCCM 2007. Well in case anyone's interested, I've had the last week to mess around with it, and the good news is that its very accessible, just the standard MMC treeview/listview structure. The one problem I've found accessibilitywise is that there are a lot of unlabled buttons, the type you tab to and your screen reader just says "button." There is no text lables, and even sighted SCCM admins get frustrated over these because they have no way of knowing what the icons represent. So others share the paine, but still naughty naughty Microsoft. The other thing to note as that the app is extremely slow. Its one of the slowest MMC apps I've seen. Running the Configuration Manager console on the SCCM server itself, you need to wait two or three seconds after down arrowing through the tree view before the view refreshes and you can continue moving. I'm not enough of an SCCM expert to know why, but I do know the console talks directly to the backend SQL database and not to the SCCM server, so perhaps pulling info out of SQL is slow. I wouldn't think so but hey. So for screen reader users, you hit your down arrow, and your screen reader may read the wrong item. You need to down arrow, wait a few seconds, then hit your read current command, I'm familiar with Window-Eyes so for that product I use speak summary. You need to also watch expanding and collapsing brantches in the tree, because sometimes you'll hit right arrow to expand a branch, then down arrow to go into the branch you just expanded, accept the branch hasn't expanded yet so you will be further down in the tree than you think, hopefully that makes sense. So, keyboard navigation is frustrating, but doable if you are just very slow about it. I can't wait to run this app over our company's WAN (that's sarcasm right there.) I'm stil learning the product, so there are likely faster ways to get around I don't know about yet. And my current project is to see how difficult it will be to distribute Window-Eyes using SCCM, so far looks relatively easy, for an SCCM admin. Ryan

windows 7, xpm, and jfw

Hi. I tried out windows 7 beta, but my system is far too old to support the windows virtual pc feature. I have a few questions. 1. when running applications using xpm, do you have to install adaptive programs such as jfw also under xpm, or will the adaptive software running under windows 7 still work with applications running in xpm? The reason I am asking, I read an article that seems to indicate that applications running in xpm, communicate with windows 7 via rdp. Secondly, I work for an organization that teaches visually impaired students to use computers. we will be adding windows 7 to the mix very soon. Since we need to teach xp, vista and windows 7, along with office 2003, 2007 and eventually 2010, this gives us 9 possible combinations. The question is, can xp and/or vista be installed say 3 times under windows 7, each running a different version of office? Many thanks. Phil

Need imaging options

Folks, I've a laptop here who didn't' like Win 7. No big deal I've an XP Image that I made with Acronis True Image Home 11.0. I can't get narrator to run let alone a screen reader, (even System Access won't install), I suspect because of a display driver. Sounds there and Narrator will run at the log-on screen. So, I ordered a IDE/SATA/USB pack. Thinking no problems, connect to drive to a desktop and re-image on there, then put the drive back in the laptop with XP back on it and all will be good. Failed because the little adaptor I had to connect onto the other end of the IDE controller that I connected to the laptop HD so I could plug the standard 3.5 IDE HD in seems to be broke, because the drives not powering up. Whither data is connected or not. What a jigsaw eh, when you can't see the miserable screen. So, options options please. I can't also remember the name of that adaptor that lets me use the 3.5 IDE HD power source so I can order a replacement one. I think it might have been simpler to have just bought a laptop drive hd enclosure, but this cable pack is going to be handy for other situations. I've a deadline of 15 Nov to get this laptop re-imaged back to XP. Cheers all! Barry. Andrew, could I merely create an empty virtual machine in VMWare (workstation or fusion) and then use the SBS sbsanswerfile.xml on a thumb drive, boot with the ISO SBS image in the virtual CD drive and have it go through a full install completely unattended, or am I missing something important? Installing SBS 2k8 without sighted help

Hello all, I was wondering if Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 can be installed without any sighted help. I know once it is finished copying files to the3 HD it asks you a series of questions about your company, domain name, date, time and country etc. Can narrator somehow be run to complete these taks? Or is there some means of creating an unattended installation of SBS 2k8? If this is possible, at what point can Narrator be invoked and how so? I really appreciate3 any information. thanks Frank

two unrelated issues that are driving me crazy!

Hello, I'm glad it's Friday, because i'm contemplating getting a drink if i make it through this day. I've got two unrelated issues that are driving me up the wall. One is i need to get it fixed, because i need it to work, the other is this worked before and it's making me pull my hair out now that it isn't! Ok, enough ranting. Here goes. First of all i hate fresh reinstalls even though i know they are necessary, even with backup images it seems as if i take a week or so afterward ironing out bugs. My first one comes in the form of vmware server. In a slight aside i found Vista performance unacceptable on this machine so it went back to xp pro, i need to find 2 more gigs of ddr5700 ram for this machine. Ok, vmware server, install it and reload the virtual machines from backup. They go in to c:\Virtual machines the default place where server looks for them. I log out of the admin account and log on as my user who is in the power user's group and i try to open a virtual machine so i can then start it. Slight problem i get a permissions denied message, with no intdication if it's a device, filesystem, user right, i had this working prveiously, and i can not remember what i did i thought i would have noted it down, apparently i missed that one. My second problem and this is occurring for administrator and my user i can not for the life of me get my view settings to stick. This is going past iritating and getting in to downright annoying given the fact that i go in to some folders and they're in icon view, others are in list views. Here's what i did i can't figure where i missed a step. I went in to my computer though not in to any drive, went to view, toolbars and unchecked address bar. I then went back to view twice more, the first to go through the explorer bars options and ensure they were all off they were, i like running with a clean screen, and the second was to take that folder from icon view where it was, to list view. I then went to tools, folder options, ensured folders were set to classic and ton the view tab turned off the hide extensions for known filetypes option. I then hit apply and ok, settings looked good so i went back in to tools, folder options view tab and applied those settings to all folders, ok-d all the way out and closed the my computer window. I then went back in, first folder the my computer window worked fine, went to the c: drive, it was back to icon view, i do not understand why these settings are not taking. If i could figure out where in group policy these settings are or create a template i'd force them by doing it that way, but that seems like using a steam roller to kill a problem. And if there's any danger that you might end up installing Windows 7 on a Compaq laptop (maybe even other makes, for all I know) then I suggest you file this message in a very safe place. Yes, it seems that the "PCI Simple Communications Controller" is the MEI, as I thought. I have used the 32-bit x86 build of Windows 7 - if you are using x64 then the outcome might be different. I ran the SP38313.exe file and it does, indeed, give an error "this operating system is not supported". But! ..this is caused by a check in the Setup utility, which doesn't recognise Windows 7. *However,*++ the EXE file, when run, unpacks its contents to C:\SWSETUP\SP38313. Under that folder are the actual driver files that you need - in the \HECI subfolder, in the case of 32-bit Windows (the .sys file is the driver; the .cat and .inf are the descriptor INF and security signature). The following sequence allows installation of the driver: * go to Device Manager, double-click on the "PCI Simple Communications Controller" entry * in the device properties dialog, click on "Update Driver" * select "Browse my computer for driver software" * when prompted, enter the path to which the SP38313.EXE driver files have been unpacked - typically, C:\SWSETUP\SP38313\HECI. * click Next. In my case (I've tested it and written down what I did, step-by-step), this resulted in the message "Windows has successfully updated your driver software", and a new "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface" entry in the System Devices category of the Device Manager. Yes, it seems that the "PCI Simple Communications Controller" is the MEI, as I thought. I have used the 32-bit x86 build of Windows 7 - if you are using x64 then the outcome might be different. I ran the SP38313.exe file and it does, indeed, give an error "this operating system is not supported". But! ..this is caused by a check in the Setup utility, which doesn't recognise Windows 7. *However,*++ the EXE file, when run, unpacks its contents to C:\SWSETUP\SP38313. Under that folder are the actual driver files that you need - in the \HECI subfolder, in the case of 32-bit Windows (the .sys file is the driver; the .cat and .inf are the descriptor INF and security signature). The following sequence allows installation of the driver: * go to Device Manager, double-click on the "PCI Simple Communications Controller" entry * in the device properties dialog, click on "Update Driver" * select "Browse my computer for driver software" * when prompted, enter the path to which the SP38313.EXE driver files have been unpacked - typically, C:\SWSETUP\SP38313\HECI. * click Next. In my case (I've tested it and written down what I did, step-by-step), this resulted in the message "Windows has successfully updated your driver software", and a new "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface" entry in the System Devices category of the Device Manager. As I said above, I haven't tested with the x64 version of Windows 7, but a similar principle should apply - just use C:\SWSETUP\SP38313\x64 as a path rather than \HECI. It had been running Vista Business, so on the face of it, SHOULD have been O.K. for W7. Naturally I ran the Windows 7 Compatibility checker (Albeit still in Beta) and was delighted that it came up with a clean bill of health. Since I was performing a clean install, I fully expected to have to update a zillion drivers, and indeed spent quite a few hours doing just that. But one has defied all attempts. It's the "PCI Simple Communications Controller". This is vital for the Wireless modem, if nothing else, and I really do want wireless working. Call Compaq, whose initial attitude was, "We don't support Windows 7", but when pushed and reminded that Microsoft say Vista's drivers work with W7, they pointed me to a download. However, seems the Intel drivers see W7, and tell you words to the effect of "This operating system is not supported". And for goodness knows what reason, Compatibility Mode is not available. Needless to say I've spent quite few hours now researching this on the Internet and have drawn a blank - even on Intel's own user lists. So be warned. George.

It's a really good product, and actually offers some features that would benefit a blind person. Hello all, Don has once again asked me to pass on the following announcement, which is below. Enjoy, and happy virtuallization! Hi Chris, Here is a package I hope is about 95% finished! I added a lot of functionality to Workstation to get information from the Summary dialogs (Alt + S), and navigate around this multi-page Summary dialog. Move to the list in the dialog with Alt + D. With several complex functions that the user is unaware of, it is possible to Tab around this dialog and get to all of the controls. The tree view in the optional Sidebar is I think, the best way to check tree status of all Virtual Machines. Again, there are a few functions that automatically report the status as you arrow up and down in the tree view. A few things I could not decide, since I am not a power user. 1. VMware normally does not place the focus anywhere in the application. Where is the best place to force the application to focus? I started writing a function, PlaceFocus, to determine which window was active and place the focus in an appropriate place. After using the application a little and attempting to magnify the screen enough to somewhat understand the layout, I might want to change that concept. A simpler approach would be to require that the Sidebar is enabled and place the focus on the Running and Favorites tree view in the Sidebar. It currently forces this focus when opening or switching to Workstation (AutoStartEvent) and when using Control + Tab (NexVMWindow) to switch between VM windows. What do you think? 2. In the VMware player, I added a script to start the selected VM in the Recently Opened VM list when the Enter key is pressed. I have not decided what action to take if the Enter key is pressed on a VM in the Running and Favorites tree view. There is a script for the Enter key, SelectVM, that can perform what we choose. It currently moves the focus to the Device Details list view on the Summary dialog. 3. I have debug SayMessage statements that help locate an issue if one arises. Most users should never be aware they are there. To make it easier to enable when needed, i have added the required lines in the jCF file. Since the JSX packager will not carry over comment lines whemn merging JCF files. I needed another approach. There are two choices. I currently have the Debug statements enabled when verbosity is set to Advanced. This of course, might piss off people who normally have verbosity set to addvanced! Anither option would be to have all 0's in the line below so that Debug statements are disabled until you open the JCF file in an text editor and change the appropriate 0 to a 1. Which do you think is best? [OutputModes] ; Will speak all of the OT_DEBUG messages when in Advanced Verbosity DEBUG=0|0|1|DEBUG Message There are a few minor things I need to fix, such as not being able to get back to the Summary dialog if you navigate to a optional Tab like "Package" that does not have a list view. Frank, I'll write more later when I'm at an actual computer. But, the Easy Install feature supports Windows and Linux guests that I know of. You can use a CD, DVD or ISO image, and its just the normal immage. Once you point Workstation at the install media, it asks for a product key (on Windows), your full name and the admin password. It uses defaults for everything else, you're in a workgroup, etc. I've not installed SBS2003, I did try 2008 though. VMWare thought it was regular 2008, but got enough installed that I could use Narrator and get speech for the SBS specific part. It's a really good product, and actually offers some features that would benefit a blind person. The biggest being when you create a new VM, you can point Workstation at the ISO image or CD of the OS you will use to install your VM, and Workstation will detect the OS and install it automatically, as well as load the appropriate version of VMWare tools. You can literly run through the new VM wizard, power on your VM, come back in a few minutes and have a working, with sound, virtual machine ready for screen reader installation. A very big deal in my book. If Workstation is still to expensive, give Player a look. Right now it will only read virtual machines made in Workstation, but my understanding is the next release will be more of a free Workstation light than just Player. Honestly on the whole I'm very pleased with VMWare's products. The VIC needs some work, but on a technical standpoint they're very sound. Does the ISO Image or CD have to have the unattended install file on it or can it just be the usual factory retail install CD. If I crate a VM in workstation on physical machine x, can I just move it over to physical machine y and have it work, like I can with VPC's .VHD files? What operating systems are supported for that automated install trick? Where can I find this documented? I the case of something like Microsoft's SBS if I pointed Workstation at the DVD how far into the instllation does it get? How would it know what the domain and local machine names should be? You can literly run through the new VM wizard, power on your VM, come back in a few minutes and have a working, with sound, virtual machine ready for screen reader installation. A very big deal in my book. If Workstation is still to expensive, give Player a look. Right now it will only read virtual machines made in Workstation, but my understanding is the next release will be more of a free Workstation light than just Player. Honestly on the whole I'm very pleased with VMWare's products. The VIC needs some work, but on a technical standpoint they're very sound. Andrew, what do you think is our best bet for accessible virtualization? What do you use? I liked VPC 2007 but I believe that there is no versionof that that can handle a 64 bit guest. There's no sound emulation in HyperV or VMWare, mainly because these products are designed to emulate servers and be used in data center environments where you wouldn't have local access to the server anyway. VMWare's desktop products, Workstation and Player, both do sound emulation. Microsoft's Virtual PC does as well, but the latest Virtual PC basically uses an RDP connection to give you access to the VM, so its sound support isn't as relyable as VMWare's, but its good enough. Actually in the IT world I know, HyperV has gotten a look because its free, but most of the IT people I know once they look at HyperV closely don't think it compares well to VMWare's ESX product, or even the free ESXI product. I think its more that HyperV is new in the market compared to VMWare, so has to catch up more. In a few years I'm sure it will be there, but most people I've talked to say its just not mature enough for production yet. Hi Ryan, I was not aware that you can point Workstation at a CD (can it be a DVD?) and it will do an automated install of the OS. Does the ISO Image or CD have to have the unattended install file on it or can it just be the usual factory retail install CD. If I crate a VM in workstation on physical machine x, can I just move it over to physical machine y and have it work, like I can with VPC's .VHD files? What operating systems are supported for that automated install trick? Where can I find this documented? I the case of something like Microsoft's SBS if I pointed Workstation at the DVD how far into the instllation does it get? How would it know what the domain and local machine names should be? It's a really good product, and actually offers some features that would benefit a blind person. You can literly run through the new VM wizard, power on your VM, come back in a few minutes and have a working, with sound, virtual machine ready for screen reader installation. A very big deal in my book. If Workstation is still to expensive, give Player a look. Right now it will only read virtual machines made in Workstation, but my understanding is the next release will be more of a free Workstation light than just Player. Honestly on the whole I'm very pleased with VMWare's products. The VIC needs some work, but on a technical standpoint they're very sound. What about Hyper-V, how accessible is that for blind folks like us? That seems to be a much bigger buzz word around IT then VMWare right now? Is sound emulation still not available in Hype-V? Has anyone tried the free version from MS or the bundled version in Win 2008? Win 2k3 64 and screen readers

Hi all, I have inherited the responsibility of managing a Dell PE 2900 with Win 2k3. Since it has 8 gigs of memory I assume it is the 64 bit version of Win 2k3. Does anyone know what screen reader(s) I can get to work on it. Can the 64 bit version of JFW work in this scenario? Also on a related note if I have the service tag from the server is there anywhere on the Dell site where I can punch it in and find out just what equipment it was built with? Thanks Frank
