Windows Home Server

Hi: I'm thinking of purchasing a Windows Home Server machine, probably the HP Media Smart Server X470 or something similar. I was wondering if anyone else on the list has played with one of these machines and has any comments. I've heard the management tools can be made accessible but you have to go about it in an odd way and you have to use Window-Eyes to do it, which for me is fine. I think at its hart WHS is just Windows Server 2003 with some customized software preinstalled. The full PC backup interests me, and I've heard you can get some add-ons to integrate it with internet offsite backup. Any comments on this system? Anyone using one of these now? Ryan

jfw with advanced active directory permissions, server 2003

Hello, I'm trying to modify special permissions in active directory. I've got a user, added to a group, go to properties of the group, add in the user, go to the advanced button, uncheck the inherit permissions button then i tab to the list of permissions that one can set. All i hear is something like allow this object and all child objects repeated, arrowing down repeats the same information, visually i've been told that arrowing from item to item changes the display as the items are arrowed over. 2003 child domain

Hello, I'm running server 2003 in a vmware environment. I've got two servers, one primary running dhcp, dns, wins, rras, etc. It is acting as the master for a test domain i'll call it example.com. I want now to add in a child domain called for example purposes child.example.com on the second server. I run dcpromo on the box and it completes successfully, yet i'm getting slowness when the two machines are talking to each other, they are on the same subnet. I'm not sure if i'm dealing with a replication or dns issue or something else. For example, i create a user on the second server then from an xp client try to log on as that user, selecting the child.example.com as the logon to. My issue is it takes about three minutes or longer to find the user and log on. In another example i've created a global group on the child domain, and am wanting to add it to the domain local on the primary so that those users can access shared folders, this is not working at all. Hello, I'm trying to clean off a laptop that has been infected with a trojan. It's an xp machine, and the trojan has replaced the lsass.exe program along with another .dll file in the windows\system32 directory. I was wondering if anyone had either an accessible copy of WinPE or BartPE environment or a way i could make it work with speech? Or, any other alternatives, a reinstall is not an option for this situation. Thanks. Dave.

vmware overview

My department bought 2 Sun servers and an ISCSI array. We've installed esx on both machines nad set up a 3rd machine as a vmwarevirtual center server. What next? My opinion is that we would want to set up a cluster and install Solaris on the cluster. But my co-worker has already installed solaris as a virtual machine on one of the Sun servers. Doesn't that mean we have lost the flexability we'd get from having a cluster?

help and support and runas with jfw9?

Hello, Using jfw9, and wondering if there any shortcuts or hints with help and support center? To me it doesn't seem very intuitive. It seems as if you have to tab or f6 through it. Any hints? Also, runas, for example logging on to a domain using jfw as a standard user, and than needing to perform an administrative task, computer management comes to mind. Using runas with jfw works, but it's weird, it's like there's a focus issue, is anyone else seeing this? For example, sometimes you have to read the current line and it's read, but jfw won't read it automatically? Thanks. Dave.

No Happiness with SQL Tools

Fellas, I am beginning to think I've been outa the biz too long when I start looking at the MySQL management tools around these days. Why do they have to make it so wiz-bang complicated? All I want is a nice navigable screen with database names to open, tables to walk up and down, table definitions without a lot of drop-down choices with buttons JAWS cannot find, and a forms definitions language that's not all drag and drop to create something that's user-friendly/user-useable and accessible all at the same time. Am I asking for the moon here? 30 years ago when I was writing order entry systems, we had relational databases with a dozen relational tables that were easier to maintain than what I'm llooking at tonight. Seriously, is it me, or what? The most I can do with the EMS stuff is select databases to register in the product. I cannot open them, cannot view or create tables in them, nothing. TIA.

Hi everybody, I have a couple of questions re partitioning and the partition table. I have a 250 boot drive. I partitioned it into two, a 50 gig boot partition, and the rest as a second partition for data storage. I also have a 750 gig external I've partitioned into six. I don't keep the external permanently plugged in, just when needed. Since I partitioned my boot drive and started using the external windows has twice had a problem at boot time, although exactly what the problem has been I don't know as there's obviously no speech feedback at that point. In each case windows loads when I press f1. Could it be that either the way I've partitioned the boot drive, or using the external could have confused windows in some way? Since the most recent format and reload, last evening I have neither partitioned my drive nore plugged in the external, and there have been no problems. It has occurred to me perhaps that my the way I'm using the external may be confusing windows. Is that likely? John.

Microsoft technet labs accessibility?

Hello, Has anyone tried the Microsoft Technet labs with jfw? They are at technet.microsoft.com under the virtual labs link. If so, i was wondering as to if they were accessible or if not, if there was an alternative format i could take them in, a downloadable pdf for example? Thanks. Dave.

What's an Accessible SQL Client?

I'm needing to develop a couple small applications using a MySQL database, and I'm looking at GUI's for this purpose. The most popular seems to be Navicat, and for the most part, it's accessible enough, but in certain cases, not enough, such as the drop-down list for field type. I just cannot find the silly button to drop down the list! So I'm ready to abandon it and try something else. Anyone got any good ideas on this? Should this be posted to the blind programming list instead? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

vmware book on bookshare?

This is kind of OT but a few weeks ago, I asked about acquiring a book on vmware. Somebody said that all the safari books are on bookshare. I can't find it but I am thinking that it may be because I am not a paid member yet. But before I pay, I'd like to confirm that the book will be there. Is bookshare.org worth it anyway? Are all of the safari books there? Are copyrighted books hidden from searches until you pay?

In case anyone is interested in this... I have not solved the problem I was asking about earlier this week. However, I've narrowed it todwn to a point where I have figured out I can ignore it. Well, sort of. The main symptom is that periodically, my Windows machine gets aninvalid DNS suffix search list. Instead of 'math.wisc.edu' it's 'bogus.wisc.edu' where 'bogus' is the name of the IT department on campus. This means that if I am using ssh, I have to give the fully qualified domain name. I can't say 'ssh lambeau'. I have to say 'ssh lambeau.math.wisc.edu'. Also, the list of DNS servers is wrong. It's for the other department. For a while, I thought there was a rogue dhcp server on my network. But it puzzled me because my IP address was correct. If there was a rogue dhcp server, it was kind enough to hand out correct IP addresses. I eliminated the possibility of the rogue dhcp server by shutting down the dhcp service on my real dhcp servers. Then when I tried to renew my lease, it failed. Actually, it was kind of funny, at this point I had no network connection on my PC so I had to get my co-worker to restart dhcp. My boss drew an analogy with cutting off a branch you're sitting on. Anyway, at this point, I still don't know why the DNS suffix search list and the list of DNS servers gets messed up. According to the people in the IT department, dhcp broadcasts can't leave the subnet. But I know it happens only with Windows machines and only when a lease expires. And it can be easily fixed by issuing an 'ipconfig /renew'. setting Primary Dns Suffix via samba

There is something wrong with my samba domain. The main symptom is that after a DHCP lease expires, I get an invalid DNS suffix search list. It should be "math.wisc.edu" but it gets set to another department like "junk.wisc.edu". If I renew the lease, 'ipconfig /renew', it's right. However, the Primary Dns Suffix is always empty. I'm not finding anything on samba.org on how to set that. I know it can be hard coded in via the Windows control panel. But I don't want to have to fix that on all 200 computers that we have in our department. Most of them are booted into linux most of the time anyway. So how to I configure samba to set the Primary Dns Suffix for Windows and how do I stop it from changing the DNS suffix search list?
