Enabling and updating WSL2 and installing a distro on Windows 10 64 Bit

Enabling and updating WSL2 and installing a distro on Windows 10 64 Bit This is a quick and dirty guide how to enable WSL2 and how to install a distro like Ubuntu. I don't use the Windows Store. This often has older Root FS images and you can't define where to install the disk image later. It just works on Windows 10 64 bit. I heard it also seems to work on ARM64 as well. But then you might need some other instructions. Works on Home, Pro and Enterprise. Enabling and updating WSL1 First we will enable WSL1. This is the old version of WSL and is on by default. So we hit win+r to open the run dialog. then we enter optionalfeatures and hit enter. then we select the checkboxes platform for virtual computers and windows subsystem for linux. then we hit the ok button and the restart button to reboot the computer. Windows then sets up the needed components. After we are in Windows again we download and install the wsl update. That updates the linux kernel for WSL and that it supports WSL2. https://wslstorestorage.blob.core.windows.net/wslblob/wsl_update_x64.msi Enabling WSL2 After we installed above stuff we open a terminal as Administrator. cmd or windows terminal can be used. Then we type wsl --set-default-version 2 to activate WSL2 as default for all new virtual machines. Useful options for the wsl command are for example also: wsl -t distro to terminate and shutdown distributions. wsl --shutdown to shut down the wsl vm server. wsl --help gives much more help to more commands. Downloading and installing Ubuntu 20.04 LTS First let's get WSLDL. This is a 3rd party distro launcher and installer. Latest releases can be found here: https://github.com/yuk7/wsldl/releases/ get the latest launcher.exe. Then we also need a Root filesystem for Ubuntu. This can be found over here: https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/focal/current/focal-server-cloudimg-amd64-w… Ubuntu 20.10 can be found here. there are already some daily builds available. though they seem to have not all packages available on apt: https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/groovy/current/groovy-server-cloudimg-amd64… After that we are going to put all things together. First create a directory on a drive where you have enough space. I created a wsl directory on my e drive because i have a lot of space there. On my computer in the office i created that directory on the c drive. then you create a ubuntu directory in the wsl directory. then you copy the launcher.exe into the ubuntu directory and rename it to ubuntu.exe. So your distro name in wsl will be called ubuntu. you can also rename it to ubuntu-20.04.exe. so your distro name will be ubuntu-20.04. Then rename the .tar.gz file you have downloaded to rootfs.tar.gz and copy it as well into the ubuntu directory. Then execute the exe file as admin. a terminal opens and it says installing... then it displays that you need to hit a key and it installed successfully. you then have a ext4.vhdx file in the directory. This is your disk image. you can delete the rootfs.tar.gz if you want. Though i often keep then so if i want to kill the os i can reinstall it. Starting Ubuntu I often create a desktop icon to the exe and enable start as admin in the compatibility tab of the properties. When hitting enter ubuntu starts. Use your standard terminal navigation keys. Note that you have no window menu with alt+space. Maybe ms will enable that again. Would be much nicer to select the whole terminal buffer. Though you can paste things when enabling ctrl+shift keys in the standard settings of the terminal. using cmd you can do it the following way. open a terminal using cmd. then hit alt+space and select standard values. select the use ctrl+shift+c and ctrl+shift+v for copying and pasting checkbox. then you should be able to paste content with ctrl+shift+v. Accessing files in the Ubuntu disk image You can enter \\wsl$\ubuntu\ in explorer to access all the files of the virtual hard disk. Uninstalling Ubuntu Open up a terminal and enter the ubuntu directory. run ubuntu clean to clean the distro using WSLDL. Backing up Ubuntu To create a backup and to also share your distro with some people you can create a backup. That will be a .tar.gz which someone also can import. Like we did above. Open up a terminal and go into the ubuntu directory. Then execute wsl -t ubuntu to terminate ubuntu Then type ubuntu backup --tgz then a backup.tar.gz will be created which you can share or backup. I hope i haven't forgotten anything.

Installing SageMath on Ubuntu Installing packages with apt update apt upgrade apt install cantor-backend-sage maxima-sage sagetex sagemath sagemath-database-conway-polynomials sagemath-database-elliptic-curves sagemath-database-graphs sagemath-database-mutually-combinatorial-designs sagemath-database-polytopes sagemath-doc sagemath-jupyter screen Then set the jupyter password with the command jupyter notebook password Then you are asked for a password. After that we create a notebooks dir and cd into it. then we start the jupyter server. mkdir notebooks cd notebooks jupyter notebook --allow-root When closing the terminal window you will have no server. You can hold it open with screen. The notebook will be available on http://localhost:8888/ with set password. Installing SageMath on Arch The same as above though with the following install commands. pacman -Syu pacman -S sage-data-elliptic_curves sage-numerical-backends-coin sagemath sagemath-doc sagemath-jupyter sagetex screen

Remote access - linux machine -> linux machine (GUI)

Greetings all, I'm in need to access the college linux machine remotly to, besides of other things, use the browser and other gui-programs. I would like to know if are there any way to do that, either from a linux or windows machine. vm wware issue

Hi. Got vm ware work station. Windows server 2019 essentials 64 bit. On a windows 10 64 bit pro 2004 laptop. Now. When I try to run server manager. When I try to click on add rolls and services. Keeps telling me an error, that no server pool or servers are present. And my sighted trainer as doing a network course from http://www.upskilled.edu.au. Says I have my windows 10 user account and the network. How can I get this to work. Need to do a lab practical. Sisghted sighted students use http://www.heropa.com which is based on hyper v and does not work with jaws, nvda, windows narrator. Any ideas. How to get this to work. And gave permission for my trainer to remote in via team viewer and then turn on audio end points. Any help. Have tried googling, but not found an answer. Thanks. Ps: need to create active directory power shell, trusts, forests, and web stuff.,

Get your logs or errors sent to a central location.

Hello, You might have also had this problem. I've written scripts in various languages as small as unlocking an active directory account to a full student onboarding system that processes tens of thousands of students every year. But the problem is, when an exception is thrown, I may not ever hear about it because unless I'm actively looking at application logs three years after the application has been deployed, I'm probably going to miss it. So I wrote something. This is kind of reinventing the wheel I'm sure. But my solution is different because it's stupidly simple. You throw your log message, exception, innerException, StackTrace and even custom note at an API point. Give it some information as well such as application name, running environment, AKA dev, staging, dev, UAT or production, Say if the message has been generated by an operating system, application, end user, appliance, network etc then just go about your business. Every so often, log in to the UI and go through your messages. There will also shortly be a graphical dashboard but that stuff will come in a week or two when I get time. Coming soon, I will create a way of taking action on messages based on rules that are user definable. For example, when the message is an error, from the production environment and priority is critical, send an Email, or even trigger a call to another end point. For example IFTTT. Here's what I'm aiming for. CPU usage goes up on a server and I get a message on my Amazon Echo with Alexa telling me what's happened. Or let's say I'm integrating two systems and synchronizing data across. Everything is working perfectly but someone adds a new code to the data and the synchronization breaks. The system that runs this is hosted off site so I don't regularly have access to the logs. That's no problem. The message is Emailed to me so I have a full record of what happened. I can even do my investigation remotely through the exception,stack trace and inner exception. The API is asynchronous and has been tested on just one server with over 10,000 calls in one minute. So it will handle lode. If you want to try it, your welcome. https://logs.itmanagement.systems Let me know off list and I'll set you up with an account. This is not an advertisement by the way. I'm offering it to people on this list for free. I will want to try to make some money on it at some point but I have no idea how to do that yet. Hi all, Not so sure my first message made it to the list, I apologize for a second message. I hopefully might find myself doing more sys administration tasks, one of which is to ensure that servers are performing optimally, as well as looking at system/application logs when it comes to troubleshooting. I'd like to know how have you gone about this in an accessible way please? I remember trying to look at event viewer logs with JFW and that the MMC console kept crashing or that jaws was really sluggish in the console? Are their alternative apps when it comes to log analysis from an accessibility standpoint? How about graphs regarding CPU/Memory/Disk performance? I apologize for the many questions, Your help would really be appreciated. Kind Regards

Hi, Has anyone tried Proxmox on a dedicated server? Right now I use my Synology NAS for running a Linux and a Windows VM, using the OCR function if I need to get a screen capture. Audio redirection won't run like it does on VmWare workstation of course but just putting it out there. As far as I know, everything you can do in the graphical interface can also be done at the command line. So it is very accessible. Here's a tip about running a virtual machine in Linux: You can take a screen capture and then run an OCR program on it to read the screen even if sound isn't working. I think almost all virtual environments have screen cap functions. In VirtualBox you get a png image of the screen. I have found that gocr works much better than tesseract for recognizing the text in those screen caps. I am running WSL version 2 under Windows 10 version 2004, with all Windows updates applied. Is there a keyboard-based approach to copying/pasting text from/to the terminal, either using the default Windows console, or Windows Terminal? Windows Terminal appears to be accessible via NVDA at the moment, but not yet with JAWS, based on my testing with both screen readers.

Trend Micro Apex One inaccessible after the last update?

Hi all, Is anyone over here also using Trend Micro Apex One? Yesterday we updated Apex One to its latest version. It seems they made the interface inaccessible. They still use the old Internet Explorer component to display most parts of their GUI but it seems its not focusable anymore using NVDA 2020.2. Object navigation just shows empty windows. Call for testing: vast performance and stability improvements in command consoles for NVDA users

Hi blind-sysadmins, Microsoft has been doing a lot of really great work on UI Automation (UIA) in Windows Console (command prompt, PowerShell, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux). UIA vastly improves performance and stability in console, but some issues prevented it from becoming default in NVDA 2019.3. Many of the bugs in UIA have been fixed, and I'm hoping it'll be good enough to be default for the Windows 10 21H1 update to be released in the first half of 2021! However, it's important that all serious bugs are resolved before UIA becomes the default. The deadline for fixes to make it into the next Windows update is 30 October 2020. I'd really appreciate it if people tested this build <https://codeofdusk.com/conhost20200928.zip> (extract the zip and run OpenConsole.exe) of the Windows Console with "use UI Automation to access Windows Console" enabled in NVDA's advanced settings and reported any issues to me. Alternatively, you can file issues on the microsoft/terminal GitHub repo (which also is used for Windows Console). If you file issues with Microsoft, please provide a test case for them to run in the NVDA Python console (see this issue <https://github.com/microsoft/terminal/issues/7742> as an example) and CC @carlos-zamora. If you need help generating a test case, please let me know. To aid in testing, you can replace the Windows default console with OpenConsole. Change the owner of %systemroot%\system32\conhost.exe to yourself (in security properties), then grant you or the administrators group full control of the file. Rename conhost.exe to conhost.exe.orig, paste in OpenConsole.exe into the folder, and rename it to conhost.exe. If you've done it correctly, running nav.is21H1Plus in the Python console (NVDA+control+z) started from cmd should return True! To switch back to your original console, just rename conhost.exe to something else, and rename conhost.exe.orig back to conhost.exe. Thanks, Bill

Virtualbox tip

I just discovered that gocr works a lot better than tesseract at recognizing text in a Virtualbox screen capture. If you're running a Virtualbox virtual machine, there's a command to take a screen cap. That generates a png file. You can run gocr on that to see what the screen on the virtual machine says. Hi all, I've recently been given access to our configuration manager console, in preparation for some training on managing and updating apps e.g. adobe reader etc. Does anyone have any tips on using it successfully with a screenreader? I use JFW 2020 primarily, however I also have NVDA installed.
