Mesh Network, Raspberry Pi, IP Camera setup, Night Surveillance, suggestions needed

Hello, If anyone has any suggestions on mesh network products and setup, Raspberry Pi IP camera for surveillance setup, and integration please let me know. I'm needing some advice. My situation is this, I've got an area of my backyard that is needing to have an IP-based surveillance camera pointed at it to capture videos of any intruders. I've got several Raspberry Pis, and am wanting to use them in a video surveillance setup. My place has the cable modem and a router in the basement, then the main floor, then an upstairs area. I'm already thinking to support this setup of video surveillance I'm going to need to go mesh, put a wireless setup in each room I've got occational drops that I'm going to need to correct and thinking mesh might be the way. Once I get the mesh then going to get a Raspberry Pi camera and hook that to a pi then to an external drive for file storage. I'm thinking a 3 to 5 day rotation time, is this feasible? I'm also going to need a way to examine the files see if there's something other than blankness in them. Lastly, and this is a big one, i'd prefer not to break the bank on this. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks. Dave.

Microsoft Outlook for Windows hangs while switching to certain IMAP folders

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to the following with a recent Microsoft Outlook for Office 365 under Windows 10? How should I attempt to track it down further? If I move to any of a number of IMAP folders in the tree view containing the folder list, or if I use Ctrl-y to open a folder list and move focus to a desired folder, then I press enter to open that folder, Microsoft Outlook hangs (becomes unresponsive) and needs to be restarted. This happens when the folder is opened, not during the folder selection process. I haven’t been able to reproduce it with Microsoft Exchange folders via my work account. It appears to be an accessibility issue, in that shutting down the screen reader (either JAWS or NVDA), then opening the new folder, then re-enabling the screen reader works without hanging Outlook. As this implies, the problem can be reliably reproduced with both JAWS and NVDA, so I suspect a Microsoft issue. The server was upgraded recently (by me – it’s my own server hosted by Linode). Microsoft Office 365 and Windows 10 version 1809 have also seen recent upgrades, so it isn’t clear which change introduced the problem. All software is up to date, including the screen readers. Everything is fine in Microsoft Outlook for Mac and for iOS – it’s purely a Windows problem.

accidental delete of downloads directory, need to restore, urgent!

Hello, I don't usually cross post, so please forgive this posting. I need help quite urgently actually. I made a mistake and accidentally deleted my download directory in my user profile, this is on a win10 pro 64 machine. The download folder was highlighted and I hit delete, I wanted to delete another folder not downloads so I realized I was on the wrong folder, hit tab to no or what I thought was no and hit enter, as I did my machine shut down. It's having a heating problem that I'm going to partially address today and fully address with a new case. On reboot I found that download directory was gone. I need to get it back. It's been quite a while since I've had to do this, help! Any help appreciated. Thanks. Dave.

Recruiters and employers

I'm about to graduate with an associates degree in network and computer admin. I do have a job working at in the datacenter/lab at a community college which is giving me tons of experience with little stress, but it doesn't pay the bills. Do any of you know of reciters, staffing agencies, or employers in the US that aren't afraid to work with blind people? I've got some certs and experience with mostly Linux and Cisco, as well as some Windows server.

Not in your live environment. Have fun. The info switch is your friend. Oh. So is get-help. Finally, let me mention commandlets. These open up amazing possibilities. From the one power shell window, issue commands to Azure, Office365, on prem exchange, VMWare, Hyper-V and lot's of other major systems. Do I need to say it again just to be sure? On... Your... One thing that you could try would be to create a JAWS dictionary rule for a space followed immediately by a dash that equates to some single syllable word that you'll know to mean a dash preceeding an option. Perhaps "xxxdash." If you try this, I'm interested in knowing how well it works. The only way I have of reading powershell is by going character by character. The thing is with speech, it's either too much or too little. If for example, I write get-ADGroupMembership, I really don't need to know there's a dash there because, I know get is generally going to have a dash after. Power shell usually follows a convention in the command structure. So knowing there are two dashes isn't all that helpful. However, hearing the kind of brackets used would be nice. Also knowing if a pipe is provided would be nice too. But the problem is there are conventions in Power shell. To be really effective, the screen reader would need to be aware of these rules and intelligently give you the information you need to speak the punctuation on the line that is actually of value. So, unfortunately, although this is a very unhelpful and long response to your very interesting question, Braille or single character navigation might just be your best option. However, I'd like to touch on the Braille thing for a second. I love Braille. And I would use it when possible. However, it's probably just me, I certainly don't read as much as I should but having contracted Braille for commands / coding is often confusing. But computer Braille can be very long. Powershell commands are often stupidly long as well Take this example. Search for all the users in a group in active directory and find the proxy address property. That is done in just one line but it's quite lengthy. A 40 cell display just doesn't cut it. Again, it's probably just me and I'm being difficult about it but I just want to read that line. I might want to keep my finger on something at the start of the line Or I might want to go straight to the end of it. Panning is an irritation! But an 80 cell display is large and the sound of the clicking gets on my nerves. I just haven't found a really efficient way of reading code on a Braille display. Especially when that code has weird characters like !$()[]{}%^"'#~ etc. It's probably something I would get better at with time but meh. I have too much going on as it is without spending time teaching myself a new way of reading code that may or may not be more efficient than my current approach. I've been reading console windows like this for years. I'm reasonably okay with it. Sorry for my very long winded message but your question struck a chord. And although it's Sunday, I need to finish something for work and frankly, I'm putting it off because. Well, it's Sunday! I don't really want to do it today. Regards. Reading PowerShell code with JAWS

Hello all, I'm wondering if any of you have any tips for reading PowerShell with JAWS using speech. Here's the question that I sent to Vispero: I'm trying to use JAWS to review PowerShell code. Is there a way to have JAWS indicate a dash preceded by a space as different from a dash preceded by some other character when reading a line? Hey Andrew, Firstly, thank you for your comments. Web interface is not important completely, because I'm an experienced user and can find some workaround. 3rd party app support is more important than web UI, I can use it for storing some apps as well. NAS storage experiences and recommendations?

Hello SysAdmins, Currendly I'm using a WD NAS unit; however due to security and performance reasons would like to change it as soon as possible. I have looked Synology NAS devices, they makes me excited. It seems that we can install Apache web server and many 3rd party apps to use on the LAN. Do you have any experience for Synology devices? 218+ seems well. Some users are installed Ubuntu and NextCloud to Western Digital NAS devices pro series PR2100/PR4100 and they said that performance and security problem nearly fixed with this combination. What do you recommend for me? Does the web interface and build-in software UI is accessible with screen readers on Synology? Thanks in advance.

screen reader accessible way to SSH into linux

Hi All, I need to connect to an Amazon EC2 linux instance and wanted to know what the most accessible way with a screen reader is. I'm relatively new to this and i thought Putty would be a good option, but even after installing the jaws scripts, the terminal feedback isn't great. Is there a tool which shows the output as a read-only textbox, so if there is a lot of output it is easier to navigate through it? One of the common things i struggle with when using cmd for instance is reading long output, so i end up writing to file instead. Hi, I just tested this on my bt homehub and it does log when it turns back on that there was a power reset. I however do not see anything similar on the business hub. BT business hub logs for turning on and off

Hi All, I am looking at a BT business hub here in the UK and I wanted to find out when this router has been manually turned off and back on again. I have just reviewed the event logs, but there does not seem to be any clear indication of this information. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can find this information? JAWS is not responsive on the browser after using NVDA

Hello everyone, Probably not a sys admin topic, sorry. I have tried posting this to the JAWS list but maybe admins use different screen readers more often and can relate. I have been long time user of JAWS and it seams to me that the problem that I experience started with the latest windows and latest browsers. JAWS would stop reading anything on the browser after I make a switch from different screen reader such as NVDA. I am visually impaired and use both screen readers to navigate on the webpages. Sometimes NVDA would read things that JAWS won't and vice versa. So, for example in the middle of my cession on the web browser, I would decide to switch to NVDA, turn off JAWS, turn on NVDA, get my business done with NVDA and then turn on JAWS back again. After this series of steps JAWS would not read browser window no matter what, the only way to have JAWS read the browser window is to close it down and restart it. Many times it is impossible because I am in the middle of application fill out, purchase order or configuration page. I have tried to refresh the page, using insert escape to no avail. Using tab won't help as well. Tried to turn off and turn on JAWS several times, still no luck. Has anybody experienced similar kind of behavior with JAWS? Is there any trick getting it back to read? I get this with Chrome, Internet Explore and Firefox. Latest Win 10 Pro. OS and latest browsers. Also noticed that it happens often on the heavy coded pages with lots of JAWA code and forms. Just to back up what Andrew is saying here, the company I work for, Atos, has around 200,000 employees worldwide and is a tier 1 IT services company. Over the last couple of years it has dispensed with all on-premise Exchange servers and is fully using Office 365 now. And to make matters worse, DELL did not apparently know of this issue as they admitted they had not yet been fully trained in this area. So finally we have had to go through the whole installation process again, but that saga is for another day. At least mail if flowing again. Warning to self. Make sure our requirements are clearly stated, at the absolute very least in an e-mail, and confirmed by the supplier. I can speak from experience. The Exchange-only licensing schemes are very good for small groups. In this particular case for example, will the network version of Duxbury work on Windows Server 2019? I made it clear to Dell that we were going to install the latest version of both Op. System and Exchange. However, the latest model was an R340. Hi I am using WinPE to image computers and I would like to get the computer to give me an audio clue when the imae is finished installing and is ready to be restarted. Does anyone know of a command to get the computer to beep that can be called from a bat file? thanks

The semi-defunct International Association Of Visually Impaired Techcnologists was working with VMWare on accessibility at one time. VMWare itself was very supportive. They gave us $10,000 and a couple of VMWare ESXI licenses to use on a test platform. That project fell apart for several reasons. One of the biggest was lack of interest from blind VMWare admins. But that might have been due in part to the way our contact at VMWare kind of took over the project. He clearly meant well but he seemed to feel it was his project. When you donate money, you can't dictate how it is spent. It's both illegal and unethical. I think if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't accept the money. I don't know -- a non-profit turning down $10K? You can't do that. Another thing I could have done is to go over the guy's head. I didn't want to get him in trouble though. PS: I am calling IAVIT semi-defunct because the board alredy voted to dissolve it. It hasn't happened yet because some people emailed me asking if it could be saved. Accessible file replication software

Hi all Does anyone know of a file replication tool for windows that works well with NVDA? I’m moving my mail server onto a new server and will need both servers to have the same data on whilst the DNS info switches over. I’ve tried freefilesync but it’s not great. Ryan, I assume it's the latest version of ESXI. Truthfully, I just found that we're embarking down this path, so I have some learning ahead. I have not previously used this product. There is a separate team with VMWare expertise that can answer questions not having to do with accessibility, and I should be able to trade off any truly inaccessible tasks within my team. Of course I'd like to minimize the need for this, so I'll be taking a look at PowerCLI. Hi All, I am just wondering why we as visually impaired individuals haven't gotten these companies to do the simple things. I finally had to drop PRTG for similar reasons. I am getting very frustrate with these software vendors that make Admin products not accessible. I am wondering if we should start a public shaming or something. Not really sure at this point. Just my thoughts. Its been years since I was a VMWare administrator, but when I was the VSphere client would automatically upgrade itself when it connected to a newer VCenter server or ESXI host than it was designed for, and I know VMWare is really pushing the HTML5 client. Just being honest here, VMWare has a long way to go as far as being accessible goes. Their Workstation product is really good, but their server products leave a lot to be desired. I never had really good luck working with them on accessibility either, they were not very responsive, that was a long time ago though so it may be worth trying to reengage them. I definitely recommend looking at Powershell and the PowerCLI as you can do many things with that. However, if you need to use a lot of other VMWare products such as site recovery manager, you'll be out of luck. I can't really recommend a blind person build a career on VMWare administration for this reason, beyond the basics you won't be able to do much as a lot of the power of VMWare comes with their supporting products beyond ESXI/Vcenter.
