cannot connect to sql server 2016 express

Hi chris. Since you are a dba, and maybe a database guru, using sql server and management studio 2016 64 bit, now, it is not letting me connect. So googled, and said, to see if it is added to my firewall, it was not, so added the desktop short cut from the desktop, turned off the windows firewall, as my router has a hardware firewall. And now still getting this error message. Any ideas. Marvin. Ps: will paste below. See if I can repair it. Short of having to uinstall, then reinstall, and losing one database, as tied to visual studio. This is stupid. All, Thought this might help at least some of you ... this knowledge has certainly helped me plan for my future as well ... https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/window-server-docs/essentials/get-start… As you'll notice ... essentials now supports multiple domains; I've yet to determine what this means for those using the essentials Experience role within a Standard edition or Datacenter Edition environment, but at least for those wanting to keep their skills up outside of work, or who might run a small business, and either don't have the budget or the MSDN subscription to grab every single Microsoft product in the book, this could be an option for you guys. In 2012 R2, I tried the Essentials Dashboard, and I'd recommend for accessibility's sake, you ignore the simplified functionality, or at best, use PowerShell scripts (every configuration available via GUI is available via PS), or just use the normal Server Manager tools. With these domain-related enhancements, I might be able to cut out an entire swath of servers I thought I might have had to deploy. (separate file server, separate Direct Access connection). I'll look at this more, and if I find anything interesting either in articles or in my own testing, I'll let you know.

Windows 10 JAWS issue

Has anyone encountered the issue that JAWS stops reading the start menu, the system notification tray and the Windows I settings? NVDA works properly but something changed possibly in a Windows 10 update to cause this? Freedom Scientific suggested reinstalling JAWS and trying a new profile, but hasn't worked. Thought I ask if anyone else has seen this in Windows 10. Thanks.

Windows 10: Turning Off The Screen

Hello, In earlier versions of windows (8.1, 8, 7, etc) you could run "displayswitch /external" from cmd or the run dialog, or press windows+p and select "second screen only" to turn off the monitor while still being able to use the machine with a screen reader. This was useful on laptops, where battery life and privacy are concerns. However, this feature seems to be unavailable in Windows 10 on a number of machines. For these systems, what is the best way to do this? Basically something like the "screen curtain" on Apple devices. Thanks, Bill

Microsoft Service Manager 2012

Hello, I have just joined this list, so apologies if this subject has recently been discussed. Does anyone have any experience of using Microsoft System Center Service Manager 2012? We are just starting to use this at work as our new helpdesk system and I am not finding it easy to use with Jaws 17 and IE 11. The main problem I am having is re-assigning calls and changing the status, both tasks requiring you to open a listbox which more often than not refuses to open. I've also struggled when trying to filter calls in the All Open Service Requests view as the filter menu doesn't seem to open for me. Also the interface is unbelievably busy which makes it hard to find the important information on the screen among all the irrelevant bits and pieces. If anyone has mastered this software, please could you pass on some clues as to how you managed it. I only have IE installed at present but I have been told I could install either Firefox or Chrome if they would work any better. I only have Jaws, but if NVDA works like a dream with it, I'd be willing to try that out too. Hoping someone can offer some advice. Caroline. Hi. was able to install sql server 2016 and sql management studio 2016 express, and able to import the databases, you use alt e to get to the device radio button in the restore databases. And then restored all my databases. The only issue, is that if I expand the database diagrams, get an error, and not sure what that is and a okay button, but the other tables, show, and then able to see the design of thetables and also the first 200 records with data. So all is good now. Thanks.,

Hello, Is anyone using the latest Teraterm with jaws 17? I used it a while back like in the jaws 8 or 9 days maybe earlier with teraterm and had a working configuration with script. Now it isn't working, jaws is not reading text on screen. I do not want to set verbosity from highlighted to all as that reads to much also doesn't work when using vi to edit a file. Some urgency! I'd appreciate any help. I have tried SecureCRT8 and heard also that it is not as accessible as previous versions. Thanks. Dave.

sql server 2014 developer 64 bit connection nightmares

Hi. using windows 10 annivesary update 64 bit, and running sql server developer 2014, 64 bit. And when I try to use the management studio, keeps saying I cannot connect. So did try a repair repaired it, but says I have a unexpected network error, and when I go to options, and database entine engine, the user name for the server is MARVIN-PC, and then says I cannot connect. Did do a repair, and it repaired it, but saisd I could not still connect. The only way to get it to connect is to uninstall, then reinstall. Never had this before when I had windows 10 1511. So, any ways, or maybe any sql database gurus, maybe setting it up wrong. Just very frustrating. marvin.

Hi. using windows 10 64 bit pro, and trying to restore some databases, and have tried jaws 17, jaws 18, and nvda 2016.3. the database combo box list does not show me the list of databases. Have to go to options, then check the box for the databases, then clicking on the button, brings up the database open dialog, but then have to use the jaws ocr to click the done button, with one of the databases, but did not add to sql studio. If management studio is not that accessible, suggest another one which works with jaws, have a whole heap of bak database backups, and no tool to restore that in visual studio, as a it programming student, and need to restore a bak file, for my current subject, about security risks for asp dot net. And I typed up the first web forms asp dot net project, and then it compiled, but when I tried to run, and using firefox 49, windows 10 1607 64 bit, visual studio 2015 community, says it cannot find the file. Unless some one has got any scripts for that database restore window, have tried searching online, but could not find an answer, for accessibility, about the restore feature, or why I keep getting a network error, and have to uinstall and then reinstall sql server, then management studio will let me back in today, but tomorrow, will not be able to get back in. might have to search to see if I can find a tool for to restore databases from bak files, in visual studio. Any ideas, or help. Thanks.

Hello, I had the opportunity to briefly speak to Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft today. I clearly relayed the message that Accessibility in Microsoft products had improved recently and it would appear that some departments within Microsoft are certainly moving in the right direction but of course more work is needed. He seemed interested in what I had to say and the senior execs that I spoke to afterword agreed. An opportunity like that doesn't come up every day so I thought I'd mention it. Regards Darragh

Hi Troy: I moved my ryanshugart.com domain to Office 365 almost 18 months ago and have been very happy with it. The admin experience is pretty easy, and there are a ton of options on what you can do to manage the service based on how deep and involved you want to go into Exchange, etc. May I ask who you’d be moving away from? My former employer had their Exchange hosted through an outfit called Intermedia and no one was really happy with it. My non-profit has a free Office 365 business essentials account from Microsoft's donation program which comes with Email. Wondering if anyone using it for an organization or company finds it reliable? Mostly want it to sync with a smart phone and Outlook in a Windows environment. Thanks.

possibly off topic: network configs and TVs

Hi all, I'm preparing to move and I want my network to be as configured to my standards as possible; none of that ISP provides the router configuration stuff. My thoughts are as follows: put my ISP modem into bridged mode and have a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter acting as primary router/vpn/firewall; DNS and DHCP would be running as Windows servers (please don't ask, but I don't know why I'm so picky about that). That's all well and good, but since I've heard that EdgeOS plays havoc with ISP-provided cable boxes (running ethernet's not an option seeing that my future apartment is an edition onto the existing house and the only connectivity available is Coaxial (there's not an RJ45 jack to be found!)), I'm looking for a solution where I can still watch a movie or watch Fox without having to pay for cable and introduce a device over which I've got no access or control. I've thought of the following possibilities so far: Xbox running the latest OS (since the gaming side of me's still there, so wouldn't be a waste of money connect to Netflix, Fox, NESN,, whatever with that in addition to music and what not), a chromecast, though not sure how accessible they are,, Apple TV, though not sure how well that would work considering I'm switching to Android on the phone eventually, and finally, my most basic but least-preferred option, get a basic TV with an HdMI output and connect my Laptop whenever I want to watch something, which, isn't often, really. Any other suggestions would be great.
