possibly off topic: network configs and TVs

Hi all, I'm preparing to move and I want my network to be as configured to my standards as possible; none of that ISP provides the router configuration stuff. My thoughts are as follows: put my ISP modem into bridged mode and have a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter acting as primary router/vpn/firewall; DNS and DHCP would be running as Windows servers (please don't ask, but I don't know why I'm so picky about that). That's all well and good, but since I've heard that EdgeOS plays havoc with ISP-provided cable boxes (running ethernet's not an option seeing that my future apartment is an edition onto the existing house and the only connectivity available is Coaxial (there's not an RJ45 jack to be found!)), I'm looking for a solution where I can still watch a movie or watch Fox without having to pay for cable and introduce a device over which I've got no access or control. I've thought of the following possibilities so far: Xbox running the latest OS (since the gaming side of me's still there, so wouldn't be a waste of money connect to Netflix, Fox, NESN,, whatever with that in addition to music and what not), a chromecast, though not sure how accessible they are,, Apple TV, though not sure how well that would work considering I'm switching to Android on the phone eventually, and finally, my most basic but least-preferred option, get a basic TV with an HdMI output and connect my Laptop whenever I want to watch something, which, isn't often, really. Any other suggestions would be great.

Hello. I am totally blind, and am wanting to deploy windows server 2012 onto a machine that was running Ubuntu linix. I am wanting to know what the easiest and least painful way to get this accomplished without sighted assistance, as it is hard for me to get it. Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I can confirm that this version is at times a pain to use but is almost completely accessible at this point. Make the benefits of SCCM known to the IT director. 2. Provision test servers. Our test and dev platform is undergoing a major redesign at the moment. 3. Implement a test domain. Again, we don't have this at the moment. The plan for the implementation of this is under way. 4. Install SCCM and integrate it with AD. 5. Test SCCM for accessibility. Hello, I'm assigned a help desk that I'm with. One of there tasks is to remotely inspect and troubleshoot machines. I'm assuming they do this via remote desktop or similar? They use cisco equipment for networking if that matters. They're running win7 on all there workstations. My workstation runs win7 as well and jaws17. I am wondering if I can do the remote work? I've not had to do remote in the past, I don't see how without something on the other end of the connection, which I do not have. Suggestions welcome. Thanks. Dave.

Hello, I know this is a long subject let me explain my problem. Three months ago I had sergery and am just now getting up to the point where I can do a remote *nix system upgrade via ssh. I use on windows SecureCRT version 6.23. For reference on the server I use Openssl 1.0.1S and openssh-server 7.1x. My goal is to tighten up the encryption protocols to high grade perfect forward secrecy protocols only. My first question is to those managing *nix servers remotely (apache web, email, imap, stufff like that), if you could take a look at the server-protocols relevant portions of my configuration files make sure I have them right? Basically I need a sanity check. The second item, sshd, again like to tighten it up I believe I have it going serverside, which I want. The problem is my version of securecrt does not support the needed protocols. My question is since I don't have the needed cash to upgrade SecureCRT are there other accessible windows terminal emulator programs? I know about PuTTY I do not use it. Is there anything else? Hello, Any workarounds for using the Microsoft report viewer? Is it just me or has this become more inaccessible in the past few years? I haven't had to check the status of WSUS in a very long time and was unhappy to find that the main content area in the report viewer was not accessible. The only way I was able to read the details was by first exporting them to Excel. Using Windows 10 with all updates applied and the public beta of Jaws 18. Suggestions welcome. Regards Darragh

Hi there guys. I'm Hadi from Iran. I've just graduated this summer from Tehran Azad university and hold a BA degree in English literature. I'm thinking about having a major change and I'm looking in to Computer networks. I've always been intrested in this subject, and have played with my devices in home to create a small network, (e. streaming with raspberry pi, sharing data between devices, and some basic things like that). I'm looking for a way to study networking, and already doing research about courses and certifications. I wanted to ask for advice and recommendations from you guys, and get help from experienced users. I'm currently looking for courses, colleges and universities that can help me to start in this subject, and I would greatly appreciate any help if someone can help me with this. There are some points I would like to make, the first one being is that I'm on a complete beginner level, and I do not have any passed experience with networking, and working with network-related gear. one very important point is that I'm extremely enthusiastic towards this path, and am ready to move abroad and accept all the challenges that comes with it, If It means for me to study in an environment that is suitable for learning this subject with accessible methods and gear. now - I say this because my current options in my current location are extremely limited, As there are absolutely no support for blind and visually impaired to study networking courses in education centers around me; So I would be completely on my own. fortunately, I have the support and funds to move out of the country if required for me to follow this path and career, so I'm strongly considering this option. this is a very general letter, but I'm willing to provide more information if needed. VMWare Vcenter and ESXI

Hi Guys, I decided that I wanted to install VMWare E.S.X.I. to build a virtual environment. What I noticed is that there was no high contrast during the install process on the server. I had to use some sighted assistance. Meanwhile when I install Vcenter on my workstation it gave me the same issues and also didn't work with JAWS. I think it is essential to have VMWare experience these days. It wasn't as bad with Citrix Xen Server in the past. My question is as follows... 1. Do you have any recommendations as for working in this environment as a server admin? 2. Do any of you know of a device that would give me control of contrast instead of using ZT or Magic. This would be for example a box that connects between the monitor and the computer's graphics card. Any other thoughts would also be appreciated. Thanks, Billy

Billy: Welcome to the wonderful world of VMWare. I used to be the VMWare admin at my old job, but just couldn’t make the accessibility work. The VCenter client, the classic or CSharp client, kind of works with screen readers but be prepared to use your mouse/jaws cursor/whatever a lot. Also, that old classic Windows client is going away, and so is the Flash based web client to be replaced with a new HTML5 based client. I can’t comment on it because I’ve not played with it. My honest bet for you is to learn something called PowerCLI and learn it well. It is a Powershell module produced by VMWare that gives commandline access to everything in VSphere using Windows Powershell. It actually works well and I was able to get a lot done with it. The problem you’ll run into is that while the core VSphere functionality is supported through Powershell, some of the addon products may or may not be. So, for example, Site Recovery Manager has no Powershell support, at least not at the time I last checked, VMWare Update Manager has some, etc. And if you progress in the VSphere world you’ll need a lot more than core VSphere. I do hope this helps give you a starting place though. EdgeOS and network setup

Hi all, I'm thinking about picking up an EdgeRouterX in the next couple of months. I've heard good things about Ubiquiti's native accessibility, though I'm wondering about the latest updates? You know how venders do that ... they update stuff and end up breaking a label or what not on one of the links we use every day. Anyway ... my other question is ... I've never encountered speaking to my ISP and asking them to put their modem into bridge mode because I've never been allowed to. Should I have my EdgeRouter on hand when Verizon or Comcast or whoever comes to put in the new modem and they will work around me, or should I let them work and then make a separate phone call to have their device put into bridge mode, hence setting up my own primary router myself? And last but not least, do most ISP provided modems have enabled wireless access points on them even when in bridge mode? Or do I need to consider an external AP? Thanks for the feedback; I want to set up my new network right the first time.

Asus RT-N66u router guest network connection difficulties

Hello, If anyone has this router please get back to me. I've just got this router and have updated it's firmware to the latest Asus firmware. I've configured it and everything is working great! Performance is awesome! All of this with one exception, guest network, I've set it up yet no one can connect to it, either with a laptop/desktop, or wirelessly phones. With a phone I just get connecting and nothing else, if I have an open authentication setup on the guest network I get acquiring ip address and then it just repeats. Connecting to the standard wireless network occurs without an issue. If anyone has any ideas or has this working i'd love to know about it. Also, if anyone has a nonstandard firmware, like ddwrt, tomato, or something called merlin, going on this router I'd love to know that as well. Thanks. Dave.
