Alternative solutions for Cisco Jabber

Hi all, I am working within a company where they have recently rolled out Cisco Jabber for instant messaging, video chat, teleconferencing and desktop sharing. I am blind and make use of Jaws for windows version 15 and this is not compatible with Cisco at all; it is impossible to navigate around the interface. As a short-term solution, i am using Instantbird for instant messages. This is an XMPP client only. Whilst this solves some of my problem, i am still unable to get access to the Active directory to search for and find users; instead i'm having to manually search my outlook address book and find their extension numbers to add them. This is because the Instantbird application does not support the LDAP protocol. The other problem i face is not being able to tell who is calling me on my cisco desk voip phone. So my question to the group really is have any of you faced this situation and if so how did you manage to get around it? I have already raised requests to the service team within my company who have raised this matter with Cisco and it has been escalated quite high within Cisco. I have also spoken to Sight and Sound here in the UK who offer a script development service, has anyone tried this for Jabber? does it work? I want to be sure that there are no alternative solutions before going into the lengthy process of a government access to work application and the development of the actual scripts. If anyone has an alternative application or a set of applications that would solve my problems, i would be very grateful to hear from you. Hello, Is anyone using a Ubuntu 14 or Ubuntu with Unity Desktop system? If so, how? I've got a project that requires Ubuntu 14.04 lts desktop, I've got that now I can't even do the simplest tasks, running a program. Vmware Workstation9, Linux vms, and no audio, Solved!

Hello, I was having an audio problem with my Linux* virtual machines. They had worked previously, but after upgrading to workstation9 at least I am assuming that's when they broke, no audio in existing or new Linux virtual machines. This included Arch, and Ubuntu, for sure. So I googled and found this link: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=di… I checked my .vmx files for each of the effected virtual machines and didn't find a sound.virtualDev entry, even though in the graphical configuration editor, (settings), I sound a sound card installed in the vm, connected at vm startup and set to the host sound card. So going on the article I added in the es1371 sound.virtualDev entry, no good. I then changed the config to: sound.virtualDev = "hdaudio" restarted the vm and it worked great! If you find a vm whose audio isn't working give this a try. Hth Dave.

Any new rootkits in the last two days

Hello, I have a question, is there any kind of new rootkit or malware released in the last day or so? It effects win7/8 boxes administrator account, what was described to me, the box gets slow, and was shut down. This is win7, was shut down cold then restarted a few minutes later. The user attempted to log in as administrator. Now what makes me suspect rootkit is that the admin password was entered, the system said invalid password, the owner did a login attempt so many times that the admin account locked out. The system was forcefully shutdown, and brought back up. This time administrator logged in successfully, but it went in to what was called a temporary account like a guest account, and stays there. Files are only accessible by the computer icon via start menu. Programs do not work such as word. I'm really thinking rootkit. An AVG antivirus scan was run as was a disk cleanup, both came up with nothing. Any ideas? Thanks. Dave.

Hello, I am still trying to get Ubuntu 14.04 lts desktop working in a VMware 9 or 10 virtual machine. Visually I've had a look and it's saying install Ubuntu or try Ubuntu. I am not getting audio when I attempt to launch orca. Does anyone have a vm or virtual appliance with audio going or an idea as to why this is not working? Thanks. Dave.

Hello Katherine I am trying to get our IT security people here to give me access to a SharePoint server in another department. One of those port/firewall things. I am hoping that I will be able to use Windows Explorer to get at the files on the SharePoint server. I am told it is much easier than the web interface. I was given the honor of setting up SP, but I ended up having to give the task to my more sighted friend because too much of it was either inaccessible or viewable but nonactive with NVDA. (and I do not know how to use the PS modules for SP.) Even parts of the site itself seem inaccessible with NVDA or any other screen reader for that matter. HI all. Considering giving up rim in favour of team viewer for remote controling computers. Rim is expensive and has some pretty serious issues if the remote end has another screen reader running, particularly jaws. However, I have a few questions. 1. how do I pass screen reader key strokes to the remote side. typically, this will be nvda key strokes. I must be missing something because even when I execute nvda commands in the remote window, they are acted upon locally. 2. I can not figure out how to end a session with a keyboard. Does anyone do this regularly? if so, wouldn't mind chatting via skype or something and actually experimenting a bit to get this right. thanks for any ideas. maybe ot but hopefully not anyone tryed the freebsd 9 if you try compile e.g apache2 there is some text based dialogs with some options you can only see ok and cancel in older freebsd you can see all options too this is if you using putty

Looking for admins to talk about accessibility

Hi all, Dolphin (www.yourdolphin.com) are interested in the challenges that blind system administrators are facing in the workplace with the aim of investigating how feasible it would be to increase the accessibility of some widely used applications with their SuperNova suite of products. If you are an admin and are interested in starting an email dialog with Dolphin, please make yourself known either on or off list and I will send you the contact information for the relevant person. Initially, it would probably just be a case of a few emails going back & forth with you telling them what applications you are required to / would like to use & talking about some of the problems that are preventing you from being as productive as you'd like. With all due respect, the people that I'm really hoping will reach out are the people who are actually doing this as their 9 to 5, purely so that we can make sure that all information that Dolphin receive is completely accurate - this is one of the reasons why I as a hobbyist am not providing any information to them myself. I feel it is also important to stress that at the moment Dolphin are only performing information gathering. My contact would genuinely like to help blind admins and is well placed internally to allocate developer time towards increasing accessibility of specific products, but as I'm sure you're all aware, time is money and any time spent making program x accessible would need to be justifiable. Having said this, I don't anticipate initial discussions taking overly long so hopefully some of you will agree that it's worth a shot. Career path, desktop, server?

HI guys. I hope this is OK to ask here. I'm a would-be IT professional who's interests lie particularly in servers and networking. Currently volunteering, gaining experience with Linux, wireless networking, troubleshooting. I use VMs to teach myself some system admin using Linux and Windows Server 2012. In trying to gain employment in IT I've been applying for first line / help desk type jobs. Now obviously a lot of these are asking for hands on, break and rebuild skills, managing printers, etc. Basically stuff I'm not too good at, you only have so much hardware to practise on, and can't really see me doing as a major function of a role, as a blind person. I've been turned down for such roles in the past basically on H and S considerations. I know, there may be many of you with severe sight impairment who have done this sort of work, if so, feel free to tell me I'm wrong, how it went etc. But what I'm wondering is. Is it worth me struggling to study desktop support stuff, given the difficulties I see in gaining those hands on roles. Should I devote my efforts to servers, infrastructure, web application support stuff instead, which I find more interesting anyway? Is the only way in through the desktop support positions? For what it's worth I apply for junior Linux, networking positions and more phone based help desk roles where I see them of course. Regards Chris Turner
