Configuring an FTP Server

Hi Folks, I haven't done this in about 4 years, and am coming a bit unstuck. I could really do with some thoughts on the below. Where I'm coming from... When i ran an FTP server back in the day, I was using XP with it's, (cauf, cauf), Firewall, Eset NOD32 AV, ServU FTP Server and a Linksys WRT 54G. How life seemed much more simple... Now, the box I'm going to use for the Server has Windows 7, a Draytek Router and File Zilla Server. It also has Windows Firewall & Eset Smart Security. I've installed FS Server and created a test account. I've set my Desktop up with a Static IP on the LAN. Giving the Drayteks IP as the Gateway, and the DNS Server it specified. Connection to other machines on the LAN and out to the Internet is fine. I cant' get a connection into my FTP Server. I've read here, http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/kb_vigor_portforwarding.html how to "Open a port" on the Draytek. I specified the IP for the box the Servers running on. Applied the setting,and confirmed it was in the Port Forwarding table, with start and end ports of 21. I temporarily turned off both Windows Firewall & esets Firewall, then went to, http://ftptest.net/ To test the connection from outside the LAN. It's still timing out, and the Servers showing no attempts in the log. It's not getting through somewhere... I did spy something in FZs' FAQ here http://goo.gl/mlydm regarding Passive Mode. I didnt' understand if this was absolutely necessary. It's been a long time and I remember people could connect using (Active, used to be the default mode), or Passive in their client. The above article, talks about settings in FZ, sticking it to an IP and custum port between 5000 and 5100. It doesn't mention if I did this if I'd then also need to open these ports on my router. FYI, File Zilla reports that it is Online and not Locked. NB. I will more than likely leave Windows Firewall disabled and figure out how to create a rule in Esets Firewall for the server once I confirm it's coming through the draytek, i'll worry about the software stuff. Also, I'm going to use something like a Dynamic DNS client once I've got the connection working. The ISP, I seriously doubt would happily hand out a Static IPv4 address to me these days. Any thoughts of what to try next? Cheers, Barry.

NVDA remote to windows 7

Hello, I've got a Dell Inspiron Desktop 64 bit running Windows 7 home Premium. It's got NVDA 2010.2 on it and it is several hundred miles away from me. That's the back story, bad news is this box is having a problem that I need to remote to to correct. I'm wondering if I can do this NVDA to NVDA also any machine I would use from this end is only 32 bit. Some urgency! I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Dave.

Diagnosing local or isp issue

Hey all, I don't really like speaking with my isp's tech support, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest a few things to try in my situation to try and determin if the below is a problem at my end or the isp's? I have a fairly old (DG834G bought in 2006) modem / router / access point combo which has been working very well up until now. Every few days, the wan connection will get dropped and I have to reboot it until it comes back up; this can take quite a few reboots. It always shows as connected in the web interface - I can see upload and download speeds, but I don't get an ip from the isp. I've tried flashing the firmware, new cables and different micro filters all with no affect which has taken quite a while since it might work fine for days then all of a sudden fail. I considered using a computer with a usb modem and internet connection sharing connected to a switch to see if the issue goes away, but I'm really reluctant to have a windows box facing the internet on my network so I'd rather not. Using a different line is possible but would require quite a bit of rearranging, so unless people think it might help, again, I'd rather not. >From reading other peoples posts on forums, it seems like my isp is a bit reluctant to help with this sort of thing until you can proov that its not a problem at your end - they walk you through a troubleshooting document and then they ask bt to run a test on the line which takes 30 days. Does anyone have any ideas about what I could try? Cheers, Ben.

This wireshark stuff is brilliant. I've had a reason to read up on it over the past while however it's accessibility leaves a lot to be desired. It seems to be using non standard colors or something for menus. When I add them to the custom highlight assignment then sometimes they read reasonably well but it's still not usable. I know that someone better with Jaws scripting would have a lot more luck very quickly with this and I also know that it would benefit many a blind sys admin so I'm asking if someone would mind trying to make it speak? Address book in windows live mail

Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut for opening the contacts or address book in Windows live mail 2011? I tried control shift b which doesn't work. Control shift c worked in wlm 2009 but now in 2011 that starts a new contact. I can't even find the option to go to the address book from the ribbon bar. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello, I've got to secure some services using an ssl certificate. Each is operated on a different subdomain for example: www.domain.com pop.domain.com smtp.domain.com svn.domain.com etc. It's now time to renew the certificates, I wasn't the one who purchased the original batch, but the client has a separate certificate purchased at the same time for each service. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to do a wildcard certificate such as: domain.com or: *.domain.com in the cert's commonname field? I'd prefer to only use one certificate for all services if possible and it also saves a considerable amount of money. Thanks. Dave.

Windows 7 terminal program or Mac?

Hi there, I have a new computer (my first win 7 netbook) and the fine folks at Microsoft no longer include hyperterm. Is there a good suggestion for a term program? Putty seems like it may work but maybe something more full featured? I need something where I can definitely send a break for password recovery. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks Scott

linux live CD?

hello friends: my pc has infected by a strange virus it can't be removed at all, even its name unknown. can I find live CD for Linux help me to clean it, specially my flash card infected too and it contains very important files I can't format it anyway. please help me as you can. always find: user/local setting/temp/svchoost.exe and many files *.tmp in user application data, also CMD running in task manager. each time make scan the program detect different warm/trogen, and the problem still not solved. pc is so slow, all anti virus sites not open, also sometimes search engine. am sorry if it off topic, but hope find solution. thanks ibraam

Hi listers, ok, if this is inappropriate, you have all the right to boot me off this list. But I write this because I'm just burning with curiosity, I have no other visually impaired person to ask, and wanted to know if any visually impaired people can do this in someway or another. So, do you make your own ethernet cables? I'm doing N+ and I know we'd have a problem when it comes to putting the colours in the right pairs but what about cutting, crimping etc? Unfortunately I'm studying this thing by myself so no practical assistance here. Hence one of the many reasons for asking. regards,

GOod afternoon, I AM very glad, that i can read somethink about using remote desktop with screen reader. Please, is there any tutorial about this how to work with this feature with screen reader? How to start remote desktop in WIndows 7 operating system? Jaws is using Tandem, but i expect, that this feature is usable only if other user is also having Jaws awith Tandem application and The best is also The same version of Jaws. Team wiever is not accessible while triing to browse The remote computer screen. Any link to some tutorial or kind message about is is very welcomed. Thank You very much. Good afternoon, I would like to also inform You, that Vmwareplayer for Windows is supporting very excellent fully unattended feature. It is very simple to fill out all required information and original CDS can be perfectly installed to The virtual machines created by Vmware foR Windows. It is even possible to run those virtual machines from some Linux live CDS. Or by using some Linux live bootable USB stick. The disadvantage of this procedure is The need of big amount of RAM awailable, and, and this is very sad, user can not access The other harddrive than The virtual harddrive, YOu can not access NTFS internal harddrive and use my computer or Windows Explorer for files browsing. Vmware player will always prevent You from directly accessing The internal harddrives. To be more exact. You can for example use Ubuntu live CD and remastersys for creating remastered Ubuntu with Vmwareplayer on it. You can use external USB harddrive and You can put previously created virtual machine files, which have been created previously by using Vmwareplayer for Windows. The issue is, that if virtual machine will be successfully loaded, if You will use bootable USB flashdisk for loading Linux live system with preinstalled vmwareplayer for Linux on it, YOu will be able to run Windows XP virtual machine from USB harddrive by using Yours loaded bootable USB Linux live CD. You can even specifi on Vmwareplayer for Linux, that You want to share The whole root folder of Your NTFS harddrive with WIndows files on it. Yes, this will work, but Windows XP will recognize this device like a network drive, and You must use Linux live CD with NTFS-3G support to access NTFs volumes by using running Windows in virtual machine. The advantage is, that You can use WIndows Explorer for browsing NTFS volumes, The disadvantage is, that You will still USE Linux NTFS-3G for accessing NTFS, by The other words, WIndows core will not directly access Your harddrive. This is sad, because You can not use MIcrosoft disk defrag, or You can not use chkdsk /f /r c: command. Because disk is seen by WIndows XP like a network drive. If You will disable this feature in Vmwareplayer for Linux, so The folder will not be see like a network drive, YOu will not be able to see The drive on Windows at all. The advantages of Vmware solution. Theoretically, visually impaired user would run previously preinstalled Windows operating system by using many various computers, because Linux and Vmwareplayer for Linux will autodetect The required hardware. So if sound will be awailable in The Linux live distro with vmwareplayer, Windows will very probably work. Next advantage is, that user can browse The NTFS drive by using my computer or windows Explorer, can copy The files between NTFS folders from running WIndows. Disadvantages. The best results will be awailable while using computer equipped with modern CPU, which is supporting The virtualisation technology. There is also The issue with RAM and that You can not simply add Vmware related big files to The Linux live CD and simply compress it to The squashfs file system. Only while running it by using external USB harddrive, not USB flash drive, or by using IDE or sata harddisk will produce usable environment. If on future will exist some virtualisation solution which will enable users to access internal harddrives without using filesharing feature of Vmware, it will very probably be a next revolution. Ofcourse, there is licensing issue, but this can be solved. Linux live distros are able to autodetecd many various sound carts. Windows7 is including support for many sound carts, but if Microsoft will not allow us to officially use those drivers also by using Windows Pe, it will be only our dream. Wine is also not The solution, screnn reader can not interact with several applications running by using Wine. -- Mgr. Janusz Chmiel

Dear users, I would like to provide You The download link for JudeuSB Wizard. IT is very sad, that integrated .exe application, which is displaiing The start menu is not supporting The keyboard shortcuts. The Tieman USB braille Voyager device driver is perfectly working in this environment. NVDA can be really started without error message and even NVDA shortcut for displaiing menu is accessible, also dialog windows created by using Wxpython Unicode are working perfectly. The task would be to please MR Jaunty Lovel, so he would modifi The source code of his application for creating start menu so keyboard shortcuts would be awailable for us. Next task would be try to run Brltty for Windows as a service, sure also place the needed Braille Python bingings so NVDA would communicate with Brltty for Windows. I think, that also special USB filters would be installed. Drivers can be added during The creation process of bootable USB. User must also download Microsoft Windows AIK. But everythink would work. Dear members of this conference, I would like to inform You about The possibility for creating Windows XP live CD. I have been also tried The WIN PE based on WIndows Vista core, i have tested excellent tool for sighted users named JUDE USB wizard. Unfortunately, sound support is not included in WIndows PE based on WIndows Vista, and i think, that sound support will not be awailable also while using WIndows PE based on Windows 7 kernel. But there is other choice. Using Windows XP and Bardspe and, and this is very important, try to use The following project. It is awailable on The following address. http://www.llanelly.com/downloads.html If You will download The following .zip archive http://www.llanelly.com/downloads/file/11-xpebuilder.html And if You will finish The installation, You will find The file msaudio.inf in The following folder: \XPEBuilder\Plugin\300_drivers\oem-ms-drivers The task is, where to add .inf and .sys drivers, on which folder? And if it is simply possible to add new device driver to The msaudio.inf file. NVDA latest development and all released version are fully compatible with Windows PE environment, there is also braille device directly supported by NVDA without need to installing it's driver. So if somebody would have The time, I AM suggesting to integrate some sound driver to The .inf file from The XPE Builder v0.1.0.146 project. There are many various preconfigured and preinstalled plugins, i AM only wondering, if visually impaired users will be able to use included alternative shell. Powermenu is perfectly accessible, it's whole start menu, so this would be a perfect shell alternative, which would be used in The resulted XP live media. There is also ammazing solution, visually impaired system administrator could buy The USB sound cart, which can be detected by WIndows XP and this driver could be incorporated to The resulted WIndows XP live CD. Because integrating many sound drivers would consume many space and i AM afraid, that algorithms for searching The sound hardware and triing to include so many drivers would break The load process of The live environment. Brltty will not be easy to integrate, because services feature is not simply to setup in live mode. -- Mgr. Janusz Chmiel
