Hi Andrew, Interesting. thought the diskstations come all with the same OS and the same ammount of software and features. thought just the processor and ram is different? oh and the hd bays. good you can't run all that much with the smaller ones like the j but thought the play would be pretty capable of doing things. especially they say for encoding stuff on. i also thought dsm 6.1 is very accessible? last time i tested it online i was pretty surprised how accessible and pretty modern it is. loads better than qnap and also the wd my cloud mirror interface. I would also recommend getting an Intel powered Synology device if possible, or one that runs containers, as it is then easier to extend the device. Also some Synology devices run a more cut down operating system, my 214Play being one of them. Some of them have a full Bash, mine doesn't, which makes it harder to work with on the command line.

Yes most of the NASs support SSH. I don't know if the WD My Cloud does but i could check on monday. Our fire brigade has one of those My Cloud Mirror boxes. though i guess i don't want one of those. though they might be interesting for my parents for example. people who like beautiful things that need nearly no config and you can't change much. they also seem to bind the user to their wd servers.

Hi all, I plan to get myself a NAS. I am thinking of the Synology DS216J. What do you think?

We have QNAP NASs in the office which are unfortunately not very accessible with their Web GUI. We also have 2 old Buffalo DiskStations which still work though they are very old. their interface is also pretty accessible.
