Good Question Vincent, I'm mostly blind , can't read a computer screen but I can see a box flash on it or disappear. I require a screen reader. I teach keyboarding and computer classes to the blind and visually impaired in our rehab center 60% of my time. The other 40% of my time I manage the day to day operations of maintaining a duel Windows and Novell server environment for about 40 work stations. When those times arise that I can't read an error on a screen or I need to due an install without speech, there are some things I try. 1. I take a guess and try to get the error off the screen by getting Window-eyes or JFW to startup and tell me something. 2. I walk down the hall and wait for a lovely coworker of mine to have a minute and sit with me for a couple of minutes. 3. some Windows installs I have learned to run with unattended installation files, still have tricks with DOS boot disks and hardware speech synthecizers and Vocal eyes for certain situations. I have also brailled out Windows XP installation notes and how to respond to the dialogs that come up. ON Ocasion, I've been able to run a Windows install without speech just using some notes. 4. Sometimes I hall a computer home and thankfully my wife values the fact I have a job at all so she reads a few screens for me. 5. Since I work for an organization that serves the blind, I of course have staff and bosses who understand the ocasional need of sighted assistance. Gotta stay on my toes and be creative. If others have methods and tips, boy I'd like to add a few to my repitwa. Hi,
Sounds interesting. You are the only it person in the company? Are you blind or visually impaired?
How do you deal with situations when you can not read a screen?
Is your job focused on the it only or are there other tasks involved?
Just curious to know.
Vincent.

Hi Darrell,
No, I'm the only IT person here and there's nothing really to install. Just enable rdp in system properties and in the window-eyes advanced settings you enable virtual chanel support. Then you use rdp to hit those computers by name or remotely you of course need an ip map in your router. It's rather easy I think. I would personally love the RIM option if we could afford and justify the expense. Hopefully in the future. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darrell Shandrow" <darrell.shandrow@gmail.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Monday, March 17, 2008 8:43 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Just joined today
Hello Troy,
Do you find IT folks balking at the need to install a video intercept with Window-Eyes? RAM and RIM have the advantage that they do not require such patching.

I use window-eyes on servers and work stations. RDP through Windows works great for me. You don't need extra licenses to load Window-eyes on a computer that you want to connect to. I've even logged into a server from home and then into various work stations. I still get pretty good connection using rdp from computer to computer to computer.

I am happy to have stumbled across this list. I am looking for accessible remote control software. I don't have the ability to install Jaws on every computer I touch, so any help would be appreciated. I used Jaws and Window eyes for access.
Thanks in advance,
Greg Bobo
