Hi George: Very interesting, and surprising it worked all of a sudden. I use Win7 X64 Pro on my work machine, and we use Cisco's any connect client. I've seen several times after establishing the Any Connect session that not all of my server connections will work for up to 30 minutes after establishing the connection. Exchange works, but, we have Outlook Anywhere set up, so if it can't connect to the Exchange server through MAPI it will roll back to RPC over HTTP, which might be happening. I've found that clearing my ARP cash and flushing the DNS resolver cash will sometimes fix things, but I'm not sure why since the Any Connect network adapter is supposed to be separate from everything else. Hi Ryan, I did finally - at around 2.45 this morning - get going, but to be honest, I've yet to find out exactly how or why. Let me try to explain, since my extensive Googling suggest that at some time or another, one or more of you will be faced with the same problem. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit onto a desktop which had previously been running Windows 7 Professional. Rightly or wrongly I did NOT reformat. I had done a clean install of Professional not so long ago, and wanted to keep "Old Windows". I then installed all Updates the system said were available. I then installed Dray Tek's VPN client. Although this needs to run in XP SP2 mode, it DOES work on my two other W7 systems, and indeed had worked on this one under W7 Pro. No problem it seemed on Ultimate, I could access the office server and all it's drives, and even Remote Desktop to the Server. The machine had had Office 2003 on it, and as that was now history, I installed Office 2007. Following by Service Pack 1, and then Service Pack 2. I then ran Outlook 2007, and as it was first time round, was asked to set up an e-mail account, which naturally was to the Exchange Server 2003. At the "Check Name" process, a dialog popped up saying. "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." I checked, and WAS connected to the VPN. Next was to go into "Mail (32 bit)" in Control Panel, where I found that it had set up an Exchange account per my earlier attempt via Outlook. Same story there when I tried to modify and check name. Having my perfectly well working laptop with 7 Professional on it, I compared everything I could, right down to an ipconfig. Googling resulted in many hits with the exact same error, most of which required Registry hacks, and none of which seem to fit the bill in my case. The registry entries simply were not there. Brainwave - had I activated Office 2007? I had not, and as I could not even get into Outlook, how could I? However, I ran Word and activated it there. I prayed. Still the same. Not being able to Remove Outlook on it's own - it was either remove Office totally, or I could repair, I chose the latter. No joy there either. Now I hasten to add that at just about every stage of the above, I had been re-starting the machine. About 20 minutes later, and for no reason I can think of, suddenly I was connected. Suffice to say that the system spent the next 5 or 6 hours locally caching my mail, and when I got up this morning, it had all synchronised. Why it suddenly decided to connect, is a total mystery. George. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Ryan Shugart Sent: 25 January 2010 02:17 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Exchange Server 2003 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. George: How are you trying to access the server? Is outlook using MAPI or HTTP to access the machine? Does this machine have anything like Communicator installed that would also be accessing the server? We have this happen at work sometimes and we shut down any app that might be accessing Exchange or an Outlook connector and then it'll work. I'm banging my head against concrete here, and wondered if any of you have experience of Outlook 2007 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, accessing an Exchange 2003 Server at my office from my home desktop. I have access via the same Virgin Netgear Router here at home via my laptop which has Windows Professional 32 bit and Outlook 2003. As far as I can see, the Dray Tek Smart VPN Client is set up identically tio the laptop. I know for sure that the VPN is connected, as I can access any of the server's drives, and even Remore Desktop to the server. But whatever I try, I keep being told that the Exchange Server is not available. However, what has got be a tad suspicious, is that I have a similar problem accessing an America supplier's server using the same Username and Password as I do onloy my laptop, which suggests that I may be missing something 64 bit specific. Has anyone any thoughts?
