I am just trying to help, don't want some one to have corrupted data ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry Hoath" <kerry@ciscovision.org> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 10:01 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Windows8, 3TB drive, and unwritable partition under windows
Oh I know perfectly well what a mindfield GPT is.
I've read the Linux pages on the topic and also the wikipedia article.
Unless drive uses larger sector sizes Windows won't do partitions >2tb without resorting to GPT.
So it then becomes an exercise to see if the drive is using 4k sectors and requires correct alignment (highly probable) then to make sure the partition table is in the correct format. then you get to make sure the GPT and legacy table agree on what you've done.
diskpart can deal with GPT in recent Windows versions if the Microsoft knowledge base is to be believed.
My initial post was considering that the 1.5tb partition may span the 2tb boundary and partition tables might be in incorrect format.
Given the drive is internal, less likely that remapping would be active as it often is on a Legacy case with USB legacy stuff.
regards, Kerry.

not necessarily true with 3tb and above better read before you say that, can cause issues ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry Hoath" <kerry@ciscovision.org> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 8:50 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Windows8, 3TB drive, and unwritable partition under windows
Better to create partitions with the operating system specific tools. for example create partitions with diskpart or the disk management snap-in with windows.
For Linux use the gpt tools.

Hello,
Forgot to mention he did partition align the partitions when he made them, used I think it was cgdisk under Linux to pull it off.
Thanks. Dave.

sounds like he needs to use the partition alignment tool or format prep the

Hello,
This is for a friend who has a problem that is perplexing both of us. He's got a Windows 8 box, it was windows 8, then 8.1, now 8.1 update 1 problem still persisting. He put in an internal sata 3tb drive for data storage not for booting purposes. He partitioned this drive in to a d: partition 1.5t, and an e and f partitions 750Mb each. He then copied data from another location to this drive.
In windows only and only on the d: partition he can not write to it. He can read from it, but any write operations fails. The e: and f: partitions are fine, for both reading and writing.
If he boots up any Linux distro from live media reading and writing to any partition on that drive works fine. He's run spinrite and other drive diagnostic software which all comes back normal.
Under Linux live media he copied all the data off this drive then repartitioned it and formatted it again as per above, then recopied t he data back. The results are the same, Linux read/write works fine, windows read works great in all partitions, but windows writing only works on e: and f: the 1.5t d: partition no good.
Any ideas?
Thanks. Dave.
