If you want to install your own software, I would suggest starting with a generic Linux distribution of your choice, and then installing the packages that you want - including Asterisk, FreeSWITCH or whatever telephony solution you prefer. I don't bother with these appliance-like distributions. I would prefer to have greater control over the installed packages. If it were running in a virtual machine and did exactly what I wanted, I might consider it.
