[Blind-sysadmins] Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 in place update breaks speech

Hello, I've got a Ubuntu 17.04 vm working it was installed with speech so when it comes up I get speech. I did an update from 17.04 to 17.10 and lost speech. On investigating, apparently espeakup was removed, and speakup_soft was not loaded with the new kernel. I've looked in /etc/default/grub for the module load line didn't see it. Can anyone tell me how to reenable speakup_soft? Thanks. Dave.
