Hi, I don't think the idea of the service is to specifically have a static IP on your iPhone. But if you run a web server at home, you may want a static IP. I used to do this. I wonder then what benefit there really would be for someone to add a static IP to their phone through buying this $3 service? I imagine there are probably a few companies that need their employees to check mail remotely on the road with a firewall that only allows specific IP's to access it, but I wouldn't have thought this would be a publicly advertised service, pay $3 and have a static IP on your iPhone. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Granados" <scott@granados-llc.net> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Wednesday, January 20, 2016 4:15 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] UK ISP Static IP tip
This is not true.
When you set up a session with a cell provider you establish a session between your handset and a regional packet forwarding engine or similar to a head end in the cable world. The mappings between the aggregator and your phone happen on layer 2 and these may change from tower to tower but the layer 3 mapping or mapping to IP happens regionally, not at a tower level. You would most likely change addresses if you traveled from one region to another but you don’t change addresses from tower to tower. You also don’t get a real address in most cases. In most cases you’re assigned an RFC-1918 address or some other reusable address and then network address translated to the public internet. So even there you may have inside address changes but you’ll appear from the same proxy as far as the public internet is concerned.
Hope that helps.

One I think is even less necessary is that from Sprint, I can get a static IP for my iPhone for $3 per month. I don't know what having it would do for me. I have heard that cell networks change your IP as often as every tower you switch over to, so if you used voip over the connection, your server would see stuff coming from a new IP and not know what to do with it, dropping the call in the process. This assumes the providers don't have a way to have that IP address follow your phone while data usage is in progress.

Hi,
I signed up to www.plus.net<http://www.plus.net> the other week and we went live in the house on Monday. The staff so far seem to be quite techy and are all UK based. I thought this wasn't happening anymore with the shortage of IPv4 addresses , but for a one of off £5 charge I was able to get a static IP of them. Remember back in the day when you could get one for free? Still though, I was quite pleased with this. Useful to know, if any of you need a static IP for home or work stuff.
