In addition, even though it doesn't really matter, chances are that it won't be running XP x64 anyway since that os had major issues. There are very few excuses to be running a 32 bit os these days, but back when the early adopters installed XP x64 people almost always downgraded - if I remember correctly several built in MS applications like Narrator didn't work. Says it all really. Remember, 64 bit operating systems are backwards compatible or at least are meant to be backwards compatible with 32 bit applications but a 32 bit os can't run a 64 bit application. We're talking about pre os stuff here though, so the CPU won't mind if the distro you boot to is 64 bit or not. Cheers, Ben. On 9/29/12, Kerry Hoath <kerry@ciscovision.org> wrote:

You can get at >4gb of ram however windows won't because you need to page it in and out and that is a pain. Linux can do it but they recommend 64-bit for >4gb ram. If you're doing recovery work might as well just use 32-bit grml and ignore 64-bit stuff you don't need it here. You do if you want to check large xfs file systems and need access to lots of ram to do so.

Hello,
Does anyone know what would happen, if I'll have a ploom of smoke, if I try to boot a 64 bit machine with a 32 bit iso?
I've got a machine that came in and can't remember if it's a 32 bit or 64 bit system. It's running xp home and it does have an Athlon64 processor in it single core. I need to back it up prior to reinstalling it, and was wanting to use grml for that, without knowing if it's 32 or 64 bit I didn't want it to have issues.
Thanks. Dave.
