How about something that can notify you by e-mail? I know HP open view can do this type of thing. It can also restart some crucial services for you. This can save you a lot of head aches.

RSA offers a talking version of the OTP token. It probably costs more, but it would easily be considered a "reasonable accomodation" especially if its use is necessary in order to do your job.

Yes, I am trying to push VPN, but due to recent compliance issues we have to use OTP technology, which will probably be in the form of an RSA one-time password token. :-(
However, I still need a method of knowing when there is actually a problem, some type of remote notification system that will let me know of the issue, then I can VPN in and go to the specific area.

VPN is the way to go if at all possible.
The company I work for uses it and is pushing to get people to do telework
(work at home). I'm working at home three days a week and have been on call using vpn for several years.

Very quiet here at the moment, and there are plenty of members.
Just kicking off a topic which I have had to deal with recently.
Has anyone used any remote monitoring/diagnostic software, that if a specific problem (possibly using an API to communicate with a bespoke application to trigger events) occurs, that it will email or send an alert? How successful have these been?
The other issue, have any of you worked any on call system, and if so, how did you arrange transport to work if required? I am trying to avoid it now, but we may have to go down this road, using remote VPN where possible.
