Just agreeing with what others have already said.
Orca will work very well in Gnome and to a large extent in the gnome
terminal as well. For a lot of console work, i recommend speakup.
Your best bet would be to get a distribution that has speakup already
compiled into the kernel. That's still a tricky business.
I have been working with Linux via PuTTY for over a year now. I don't
remember when I actually used Gnome last. How are they getting on with
the Orca project? I realise I'm asking a question on another persons
thread here so feel free to provide a kicking as necessary. and / or
respond off list if you prefer.

Orca is the screen reader for the linux graphical user interface. It works pretty well. It's pretty much all I ever use. I sometimes still use voiceover but I do 99% of my work with orca.
