Right. That was my experience with both the server2 web app and the vmware virtual infrastructure management client for Windows. Maybe I just happened to get the 2 vmware products that aren't accessible. My department at the university paid many thousands of dollars for the virtual infrastructure software and I'm pretty ticked off that it's inaccessible. What is wrong with developers these days? Holy cow, the 508 regulations have been out for 7 or 8 years? Maybe longer. Technically, my department wasn't supposed to buy that product since it violates the 508 regs. I guess it really just shows what those regulations are worth. My boss is very supportive but I don't think she would have refused to buy vmware just because the admin interface is inaccessible to me. We are getting into a virtual infrastructure in a big way. It's a basic part of our strategic plans for the future of the department's infrastructure. ----- Original Message ----- From: "rick watson" <rwatson@ogleveeltd.com> To: "'Blind sysadmins list'" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 9:09 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] getting started with vmware server
The app I tried was vmware server version 2.0 which started as a web page but had no links to click on. I have downloaded vmware server 1.0 and am giving it a try. Running a windows xp install now.

Hmmmm... Are we talking about the same product? I'm talking about the vmware
infrastructure client for Windows. It's a custom app, not a web app. That app does not linearize well. It has no menu, just graphics to click on none of which are labeled. You have to use it entirely in jaws cursor mode, which
is difficult because of the afore mentioned lack of linearization. I guess you could get used to it and eventually figure it out but it would not be easy. Say you want to take a snapshot. You have to use the jaws cursor to find the virtual machine. You click on that and then you have to cursor around again to find the snapshot link and hope you clicked in the right place in the first place or you're going to take a snapshot of the wrong virtual machine. And then, of course, you'd better make sure you click the snapshot link and not the delete link.
I got sighted assistance to help me at first. I would click on a vm and then
get the cursor over the snapshot link and ask my co-worker "Okay, I'm about to take a snapshot of vm1, right?" But if I hadn't had that sighted assistance, I'd have been pretty nervous about doing something wrong.

Hi,
I don't have any issues with using Vmware ESX client under Windows with Jaws, myself.
Thanks. Andrew.

Wow, you had my hopes up there for a while when somebody asked where the jaws scripts were. I was hoping there was such a thing.
Yeah, I have gotten vmware server2 for linux working and have a windows virtual machine running. But it was quite a struggle. The web interface is nearly inaccessible. I mean, you have to really be a detective to figure out where to click in order to use the interface. I got it figured out but I wouldn't want to have to go through that again. One of the things you can do is create a desktop icon to start your virtual machine so I just click on that now. If I ever want to take another snapshot or restore from a snapshot or add some hardware, I'm going to have to figure out the web interface again. Huge pain.
Vmware ESX has a Windows program that does the same thing as the web interface for server2 and it's no better.
I don't have Window-eyes so I cannot comment on that. But I tried the server2 web interface in Windows with jaws and nvda, in Mac OS with safari and voiceover, and in linux with orca. By far the best was Windows and jaws. Most people on this list are windows systems admins anyway. But if you're a linux guy, and you're trying to admin vmware server2, I'd advise you to connect to your linux machine from another machine running Windows.

Hi Ken, Unfortunately no vmware scripts on that site. And the vmware 2.0 server interface is in a web browser and nothing in it is a link or a button. Rick

Good morning listers,
Two questions.
1. What is the url for the jfw scripts for vmware server.
2. What is a good getting started guide for creating virtual machines.
Thanks
Rick
