i think it depends on who you talk to at freedumb. They told me the opposite. I needed to activate more than 3 computers, (not at the same time), so they advised that i use a dongle. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Edick" <mdedick@yahoo.com> To: "'Blind sysadmins list'" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2008 3:48 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] JFW activation
Yes, but freedom doesn't like to work with one using ILM as much if they have a dongle. They have told me at times that I shouldn't be using both. In addition, if you loose your dongle, they have told me that it could jeopardize my whole license. Thankfully I haven't lost one, they are just fragile.

when using a dongle, you still have your ilm. the dongle just gives you portability.

So, I'd still have my ILM license as well, or does that get turned off?

the dongles cost $45 u.s. when you get an sma, freedumb sends you an update file that you install using the dongle viewer program. you have to request the file from tech support, they don't seem to send it out automatically.

How much extra does it cost to buy the dongles, and how do they get upgraded when you add an SMA, say after 11 is out and it's time to renew again? If you get one, is it in addition to the ILM or would I have had to buy it when I got my original Jaws license?

At work, we have a network jaws with a 10 user license. It works quite well for the most part, except if the network connection drops to the server. What I use for my own part, is I purchased a dongle. I don't use their idiotic ilm scheme, i just keep my dongle plugged into the machine. no activation problems. I have several dongles as a matter of fact, one i keep in my own machine, and one I can take around to other machines along with a thumb drive version of jaws if I need to do maintenance on them. phil

Yeah I agree that it is overkill but FS didn't give me any choice in the matter, their way or the highway. Frank

Hi,
It was the same person who spoke to me on this issue. I did write back,
so hopefully my comments would be passed on.
In my case, a network server doing the auths may be a bit overkill for my needs, I am only a single user of JFW, and don't really want to install a network auth server. Also, at work, this may be a security issue, as all the services have to be signed off by various people.
Thanks. Andrew.

Interesting... I had to get my activation reset yesterday as well. The Microsoft classes I am taking use VirtualPC and each time I get a new virtual machine to study on I need another authorization. I want to do the right thing so I own 4 JFW licenses. However yesterday I got an email reply from Beth Soreanno (sp?) in somewhat of an accusatory tone telling me that I have requested too many authorization resets. After explaining to her the situation about me going to school (New Horizons Computer learning centers) and the need for many authorizations she took my information and passed it along the way. This afternoon I got a call from Eric Damerery (sp?) himself and he said the solution to my problem was to have me set up a network JAWS license server which will administer the licenses that I have instead of installing the authorizations on each local machine. I am not sure how much this will cost me or how well it will work (if at all) but I will get it set up and report back to this list. I have never had a problem getting my authorizations reset and I suspect that FS is either seriously fearing piracy or is being overtaxed by the whole ILM scenario. Frank

Hi,
Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific?
I normally request a reset around twice per year, but this time I had an issue where I upgraded the RAM in my laptop, causing me to have to activate again, then this weekend I tried to install Vista, activated, and had a driver crash which meant reinstalling. I did get the activation count reset, but I got a message stating that they have noticed that I had to have the account reset a few times, and to contact support if this continued happening.
I am frankly unhappy with the current activation process, and wonder if anyone has got FS to work round it in their situation?
At work its even worse since due to the license type I was given I only have one activation, which means that if I need to reinstall I am going to have to reset it afterwards.
Thanks. Andrew.
