Hi, This might make sense actually; if the doc has something like dvi / hdmi out then it's going to have to mess around with the display, so whilst I'm not a Jaws user, I can sort of understand where he's coming from. Why on earth you'd want a USB doc is beyond me though; just go for one designed by the company that makes the laptop; my experiences with docs suggest that the latitudes from Dell are the best ones to go for & their usually pretty good machines as well with great business warranties. Hi folks,
Thought I'd give an update on this.
Here's the reply I got from my contact in the RNIB
" Hi Barry
The laptop needs to have a dedicated port replicator socket - this is usually underneath the laptop. This means that when you look at the specification of the laptop, one of the connections will be for a Dock or Port Replicator.
USB docking stations create another display driver for Windows. JAWS cannot hook into the USB display driver and can cause JAWS to crash or not to speak.
From my experience there have been no such issues with a dedicated port replicator. These connect directly to the equivalent circuits on the laptop motherboard; therefore there is no additional USB display drivers installed."
The Dock or Port replicator will be available from the same manufacturer and will be matched to the laptop model.
You can get port replicators or docking stations that plug into the laptop via USB. However, these may not work with JAWS. The port replicator or docking station needs to connect to the laptop via the dedicated port replicator docking station socket."
Regards, Barry.

Have you actually noticed this?
That's nuts!
I've been using docking stations for HP's, Dell's and even the horrible Fujitsu machines that we use here and I've never had a problem with Jaws authorization.
This is on XP and 7.

Yeah, when I grow up, I want to be an adaptive technologist too.
Actually I suspect they were talking about authorization. I have seen many times where the authorization will vanish if one docks a laptop or undocks it. Sometimes, if you activate both states, it will stick for a while but that system is so sensative to hardware changes, I have often seen it unauthorize for no apparent reason at all. A hardware dongle will get around this but that's one extra little bit of kit to carry around and takes up a usb port.

Darragh,
I've never bought a docking station & didn't want to buy one that was going to mess up video or something. I did scratch my head with this so called I T Asessor from the RNIB said you had to be careful.
I take it you need to buy a docking station from the same manufacturer as the laptop?
I was thinking of getting this laptop,

Do the Del Lat's still have an apps key? I've seen a few Insprons
lately that have done completely away with the apps key. No FN switch for it, notten.
Cheers, Barry.
I'm after one with a numpad built-in & a decent CPU.

hahahaha.
What does a docking station have to do with Jaws?
Sometimes I wonder about these people. Not you Bary. I mean the people who are advising.
I like the Dell latitude laptops. Very nice. Docking stations are decent as well.
If portability is important, Go with the smaller XPS. Absolutely spectacular system.

Hi,
I'm looking up laptops & docking stations.
A guy I was talking to some weeks back in the RNIB mentioned something about being careful on the docking stations, in-terms of compatibility with JAWS.
Is this true, and what would the criteria to determine this be?
Cheers,
Barry.

Barry.
