Hi. No you would be controling the machine either via the web or via SSH. You don't have speech on the server at all I don't think sound's enabled either. All the best, Mo. Zameer Mahomed <core7xx@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi,
Thanks for letting me know the procedure for installing.
Just curious, does one have speech after installing or writing the image? or does it have to be installed manually?

Hi.
to install nas4free, you can either install it directly to your hard drive, or you can use what's known as an embedded image. this is an image you would write to a USB or SD card device and boot the server from that device. I used a pen drive in my case that plugged directly in to the
motherboard of my server via the internal USB port.

Hi there.
Thanks for all the replies so far.
I've read up on building of Nas devices and I must say it looks interesting, I've never given it much thought initially. However, I'm not sure on how I would go about installing NAS4free as I've not used anything to do with Linux before.
My reason for considering the hs-210 storage server, as it is fanless and has a compact design. If I could somehow build a fanless system which I'm not sure is

perhaps I might really consider a self-build.
@Andrew, do you perhaps know if they might upgrade all their NAS devices at the same time to the new version? Or are newer software versions ment for specific NAS devices only?

Hehehe - I don't think Netap will be in the running here.
The next version of the Synology GUI is apparently going to be made
accessible, I have one of their units so will see how this goes.
There are some other interesting NAS projects that use your own hardware - one I was looking at was UnRaiD - heard good things about it, as it can run virtual servers as well. Haven't got enough disks to try it out yet though. One advantage with the pre-built units is their
power consumption which is usually lower than general purpose kit.
I used a Thekas NAS at my old job for a while and that had a usable GUI, all be it that it used an ancient version of the firmware.

I have worked with a Lenovo NAS and it was an entirely unix shell type environment.
Also, way up the price spectrum I have done a lot with Netapp and they have a very good CLI.

Hello listers
I'm currently in the market for a NAS. Being new to these devices, my concern is accessibility, as i'd like to make full use of the device.
I do understand that one may manage these devices via a web interface which sounds abit promising.
I can get my hands on the following nas devices: QNAP HS-210, which is what I'd like to get. Lenovo iomega ix2 synology ds414J and also some NAS devices from Thecus.
If you've used NAS devices from the above listed Manufacturers, your advice would be much appreciated.
