I haven't tried running any virtualization stuff on it yet. However, my uncle just setup a 2008 r2 test domain under vmware on an ultra low voltage core 2 duo which runs noticeably slower than the i3 350m which I have in the r700, so you should be fine really. I have an atom based netbook running the aging n270 which actually performs pretty well, but obviously any of the i processors are going to blow it out of the water, so it really depends on what your wanting it to do. I was just about able to run vinux under virtual box and it was able to handle things like wamp and java compiles very well; I've turned it into a pvr now. I just bought a portege r700 which I'm pretty impressed with. It can take an i7 if you have the money, upto 8GB of ram and it comes with a 7200RPM drive by default. BAttery life is listed as around 8.5 hours; in practice it only really manages 6, but thats still not bad for the spec imo.
Do you really need an i7? Even some of the i3's rub sholders with high end c2d's, although obviously with an i3 you don't get turbo boost which does make a noticeable difference.

Hi all, I am in the market for an ultra portable laptop (3 lbs or less). My primary concern is the fastest performance. I have an Lenovo x200 which is on its last legs and need to replace it ASAP. Cost is really not a factor. Can anyone recommend a very high performance ultra portable? Should I get the x201 which is the replacement for what I have or is there something better out there. I looked at the specs for the x201 online and was dismayed to find only the garden variety of I5 processors available. Thanks Frank
