I had the same issue when I was thinking about taking the CCNA. First, packet tracer was completely inaccessible so we bought actual Cisco hardware to do the labs on and worked accordingly. This year, I’m hoping to get Dynamips working properly before I take the 4/500 level Cisco class. As for the exam itself, I was told that Braille would not be allowed in any capacity because of the possibility of removing it from the testing center. I was also told that while I would be given a reader, they would purposely not have any background in networking. My problem with this is that in this case, you’re spending most of your time explaining to the reader what to read and barely any actually doing the work. Also, sighted testers are given a white board and are NOT expected to do subnet conversions, IP ranges, etc in their heads, while blind test-takers are. This, in my book, is completely unfair. My VR counselor mentioned that she knows one of the attorneys at Pearson Vu, and would be willing to contact her on my behalf, which I am considering doing. I would LOVE to see this change! There should be NO reason why Cisco shouldn’t be open to a blind person. Best, Megan

Hi,
I have been able to work with my eye doctor via email to get such documents signed, and usually turned around with in 1-2 days.
The best thing is to just fill out all the information and just email it to the doctor to sign. I.e. make it as easy as possible.
Best, Mika

My current difficulty when it comes to getting prepped for exams is believe it or not, not finding resources, but getting the accommodations form signed by the right people (when I was in college, I just simply had the head nurse sign it for me) but now that I'm out, until I find a doctor that I trust, there's no getting that thing signed for me (my ophthalmologist doesn't have a working fax number ...)

Andrew, I have thought the same thoughts. Cisco Academy for the Visually Impaired is by far the best source for taking the Networking course toward a Cisco certification plus the IT Essentials course for an CompTIA A+ certification.
I have not sat for either exam, but understand that progress is being made on taking the exams, but still there is far to go.
The Admin for www.ciscovision.org or www.cavitraining.org is on this list and can speak to it more so then I.
But the courses are high level, academically intense, and certainly the best courses around of all the online providers of technical courses for the blind or partially sighted.

Hi,
Reading the recent tweets that a VI specialist college in the UK has started running the Cisco courses. I emailed them at the beginning of the year enquiring how they worked and whether they were doing anything about the actual exams, and got the usual story that they were doing the academy study but not the full exams.
I was intrigued to read the tweets yesterday regarding one of the students winning a paid work placement with Cisco. Now just to be really clear, I couldn't be more happier for this guy, and I fully believe he deserves it. However, I am now wondering if and how this could benefit other blind people who are looking for jobs in this area, and have done the same courses/tests etc. in the past, and are still looking for employment in the area, or for those people who have failed to get the exams in the past through lack of access.
