sounds like he needs to use the partition alignment tool or format prep the partition using the tool from its manufactorer, most of these drives like one large partition when they get that size ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Mehler" <dave.mehler@gmail.com> To: "blind-sysadmins" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 7:52 PM Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Windows8, 3TB drive, and unwritable partition under windows
Hello,
This is for a friend who has a problem that is perplexing both of us. He's got a Windows 8 box, it was windows 8, then 8.1, now 8.1 update 1 problem still persisting. He put in an internal sata 3tb drive for data storage not for booting purposes. He partitioned this drive in to a d: partition 1.5t, and an e and f partitions 750Mb each. He then copied data from another location to this drive.
In windows only and only on the d: partition he can not write to it. He can read from it, but any write operations fails. The e: and f: partitions are fine, for both reading and writing.
If he boots up any Linux distro from live media reading and writing to any partition on that drive works fine. He's run spinrite and other drive diagnostic software which all comes back normal.
Under Linux live media he copied all the data off this drive then repartitioned it and formatted it again as per above, then recopied t he data back. The results are the same, Linux read/write works fine, windows read works great in all partitions, but windows writing only works on e: and f: the 1.5t d: partition no good.
Any ideas?
Thanks. Dave.
