Hello Andrew, Thanks for your reply. Having experience with Orbi mesh network systems what is your take on the rbk50? I was hoping for an rbk50 with three satellites the main router and two satellites. Thanks. Dave. On 2/10/20, Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgson.io> wrote:
Hi Dave,
When I moved out of the old flat I didn't use the Orbi anymore as I didn't need the Mesh system. I went with a PFSense system and a Nano HD from Ubiquiti for a while, replacing it with a Dream Machine just after Christmas. I moved out of the old flat in April 2019 so thats when I stopped using the Orbi.
The Orbi I had was the RBK53 which was the RBR50 router and 2 RBS50 points. The reason I went with this setup was because each RBS50 had 4 Ethernet ports which I used to hook up Sonos kit in the various rooms, and I had real issues with thick walls blocking wireless signals. Even with this setup it kept failing until I purchased an RBW30 (wall-plug unit) and put it in the hallway between the RBR50 and the RBS50 devices. After then it worked really well.
If you're going to do this with Sonos kit its very important to turn off the Sonos wireless card otherwise it will try and do something clever with the Sonos in-built wireless functionality and can in some cases create a loop.
In terms of firmware updates they weren't put out all that often probably 2-3 times a year. I got the units in the middle of 2017 and at the start there were some issues and more frequent updates but they got less over time. The feature set on the routers is nothing special, I think there may have been a basic VPN server on the units but nothing special. I think if you want that kind of functionality I would put something behind the router itself or use a more capable unit. You should think of the standard mesh systems as consumer gear.
I still do have the units, was going to sell them at some point but kept them as spares, so I could potentially find something if you were interested.

Hello Andrew,
Thank you for your reply. What Orbi mesh router system do you have? What firmware is it on? Do they have frequent firmware updates? Does your Orbi router have OpenVPN server support?
Thanks. Dave.

Hi,
I kind of agree, I went with the Orbi because most of the others rely on apps to configure them and I wanted something with a web interface, at the time the Orbi was the only option, nearly everything else was easy setup on apps only.
The Orbi in my view is still the best router out there in terms of configurable features, I am not so happy with the Netgear router interface but it works well enough. I am using Ubiquiti kit now (actually just got a Dream Machine over Christmas), and I would probably look at using their Ubiquiti Unifi gear in mesh mode if I needed to go that route again.
There is also the Synology rT2600 which can then act as a mesh basestation, that is a very configurable beast. Not sure if Draytek are going to come out with a mesh system at some point, I have read rumours in various places.
I haven't gone near Asus. Andrew. ________________________________________ From: Steve Nutt [steve@comproom.co.uk] Sent: 10 February 2020 15:05 To: 'Blind sysadmins list' Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Netgear or Asus Mesh
Hi,
I never fancied Mesh, they are not that configurable if you are an advanced router user.
All the best

Hello,
I'm going to be getting a mesh system for my home and want to hear from those who have them. After researching and talking to friends I'm thinking either the Asus ZenWiFi or the Netgear Orbi both AC3000 (I don't have anything AX currently) and both Tri-Band, but I'm wanting to hear others recommendations and experiences. If you've tried one or both please let me know your impressions.
I am also interested in any of these systems phone apps and how accessible they are if I would need to do setup on them either locally or when I'm out needing to change something. For reference to this question i'm using a windows10 laptop, a win10 surface pro tablet, and an android I think it's 8 phone and an android 9 tablet, so that's what any apps would have to run on.
If any of these (or other) mesh systems have native support for an
