Hi Andrew: Win RE should have Narrator available in it. At least I've been able to boot off a Windows installation image and select WinRE and Narrator has worked there. Jason, do you know what tool was used to make the custom PE image? I know there's a variety of tools available, some Microsoft and some 3RD party, but if you know you should definitely mention that when you report to EDAD as at the least Microsoft tools should allow you to imbed Narrator into the PE image. I think I remember someone on MS (maybe even on this list) saying the same thing here. To be honest it’s a bit annoying there's no access to the recovery environment using speech in the same way there is with the ISO install, especially given that most blind folks may just want to reset their machines and don't want to do a complete reinstall. Looks like others on this list may have another solution for getting a customised PE environment up and running though. Thanks. Last I know this wasn't possible unless you were using the Windows ISO images and I do not believe it is possible to build a WinPE image to include Narrator. Work was done specific to the Windows ISOs to get this included for the talking installs of Windows. I myself use that image and exit to a cmd shell as mentioned here with shift+F10. I know it is more effort but I'd encourage people to log feedback on wanting this scenario to work through email to edad@microsoft.com <mailto:edad@microsoft.com>. The only one I use regularly is the one built by image for windows which is pretty standard I think. However, that one includes narrator. It does start with their shell but you can exit out of it to a command prompt and do whatever. Will do some digging and try and figure out what they did differently to include narrator. Hi.
The problem I have isn't so much getting NVDA started but getting any usable audio.
Thanks. Andrew.

Hi, you might try shift f 10 when the image has booted, then navigate with the command prompt to get to the directory and start nvda. With sighted help the first time you could also envoke notepad and use it like your opening a file and see what drives windows has made to find the nvda directory.

Hi.
I've never managed to get this working on anything other than the Windows setup image. This includes the WinRE recovery environment you can boot into from your machine.
Let us know if you get it working. Andrew.

Hi all, I posted this a few weeks ago, but don't think it went through for some reason. At my company, we use a Windows PE USB key to start the process of building a new Windows machine. I thought that Narrator was included in Windows PE, but I'm discovering that it isn't. Has anyone been able to get NVDA running on Windows PE? I know this was done years ago, but that was with a Windows 7 PE image. I'm going to take a crack at integrating NVDA, but wondered if anyone has experience with this.
