Hello Everyone, Got another Mac issue. How do I unblock a web site? I have checked /etc/hosts and finding a terminal wasn't fun, the site isn't there. Is there another way to unblock a site other than /etc/hosts i need to unblock a previously blocked site. Thanks. Dave. On 9/10/10, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:
Hello Everyone, Ok, got some additional info on this IMac. I might be out of luck with it in terms of Voice Over, though I hope not. Sighted help got sound going, the sound card was down so that is now working. And I have some additional info on it. The operating system on this IMac is OS X 10.3.9, first question can I update that to 10.4 or later so I can get Voice Over? This is not so important for this IMac, but if I'm going to get one I'm going to need VO. The processor in this IMac is a PowerPC G3 500 mhz. The machine has 384 mb of SDRam. From my understanding I have to go to network Preferences to get this switched over from dialup I think it is trying to use a modem to LAN card. I've got a cat5 cable plugged in but the light isn't going on the router, which tells me it's either bad, not likely or that its' not sending out any signal out the LAN card at all. Please be specific as to step by step what I have to do to to get this on the net. Thanks. Dave.

Hello, First of all thanks to everyone who is helping me swim in the Mac pool. Let me describe this keyboard and then i'll ask a question on OS X. It's a Mac keyboard looks a little different from a pc one, smaller more compact and looks like has a few more keys. I'm going to use a lot of pc keyboard terms please forgive me. On the bottom row left side of a pc 104 you've got the control key, left windows key, left alt key, spacebar. I don't think these functions are the same, apple key, options key, and command key? Which is which. This baby has one key to the right of it's space bar just one then there's a set of arrows. Now going to the top it looks like a pc keyboard, escape key on the left, three sets of four for the function keys f1 through f12 is that right? Then there's a numpad which looks like it's got more on it than a pc numpad does. Bottom of it, on the left would be an insert key then 0 then enter if it were a pc keypad. Above that still comparing with a pc numpad is 1, 2, 3, then above that 4, 5 which is marked, and six and above that seven, eight, and nine. Now to the right of 4, 5, 6, and 7, 8, 9 on a pc keypad would be a single key plus this one has two i'm not sure what they are. Finally above 7, 8, 9 on this keypad there ard two additional rows each of four keys, I have no idea what these are. Is this where the volume up and down keys are located? To OS X how can i determine the version? If it's not Tiger can I upgrade it by pulling in updates? Of course that's dependent on me getting it online, but that's coming up next. Thanks to all.

Bear in mind that not all os 10 versions have voiceover; it was included from v10.4 (Tiger) If you press the volume up and down keys which on a desktop are the first and second respectively on the far right row of 4 keys on the top row of the keyboard, you should here some sounds which should give you an idea if the volume is muted.
Hth.

You should just have to hit the mute or volume buttons probably f9 - 12 keys or so I'm not sure on the imac. To start VO type command F5 and it will start. From there you can get to your network preferences and configure them as you wish with a vo keys + m then down to system preferences. VO keys are option control. I'm really green with the mac ut using a new I7 with the 500 GB SSD.
Thanks Scott

Hello, Do we have any Mac users on this list? Specifically an IMac running OS 10.x and that's all I know. I know it comes with Voice over, but it's not got sound, not sure why, and not hooking up to the internet. I believe from what little i've gathered that it was hooked up to a dialup connection. I need to get sound, voice over, and internet, and I know nothing about Macs, just pc's. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Dave.
