Hi Chris, Well on the Pi side they have as far as i know now in the pi 3 mapped the lan port to its own connection. though its still 100 mbit. I thought of getting a Synology DS216J or something like that. Its mainly just for private use so no company data. though i wonder if i should wait if the DS217J might come out. I also would just use 2 disks which do raid 1 mirroring. qnap and wd seem to fall out of the frame because wd seems not to care much about privacy and makes use of their own servers to access the data on the nas very heavily and some security problems that came up recently and qnap being inaccessible in their web interface. meaning unlabeled buttons and problematic file lists. Glad to hear the synology gui has improved. I've got an old one but when upgrading my NAS last year, I decided to just get a small office class server and run Linux on it. I guess since you mention the raspberry pi, you know your way round linux. I wouldn't use a raspberry pi as a NAS, other than maybe for experimentation. Unless things have changed in the latter models, I have an old pi, the usb and network port share the same bus. Also I've never found it that reliable. There are some Linux distrobutions aimed at providing a NAS solution out of the box, Freenas being one. It's quite resource hungry as it uses the ZFS filesystem. Also I didn't like the gui much and am personlly fed up of fighting with guis to get stuff done. If you're interested, What I actually use is, is an HP Proliant Gen8 Microserver. I'm using virtual machines but could have just stuck Ubuntu server on it. I maxed out the RAM to 16gb and run a HP provided custom image of vmware esxi offf an internal usb stick. Leaving the 4 disks for vms and storage. The esxi interface has some issues of it's own but in my case as I use VMWare workstation, I'm able to use it's interface and connect to the vms to make any virtual hardware changes. The NAS, well file server, vm is Ubuntu Server 16.4 running Samba and plex. I could have put Owncloud on there too if I wanted a web interface. I manage the vms otherwise via ssh. Regards. Hi Andrew,
I guess its better than using a insecure (wd nas) or inaccessible (qnap) device. I guess all of those have downsides though i guess even in the private sector it would be a better solution.
Haven't looked at buffalo or others yet though.
interesting would also be a raspberry pi 3 with usb hard drives and OpenMediaVault though the transfer speed would be awesome. *smile*
Greetings, Simon
I guess the wd disks would be good for my

Hi,
The Synology web interface is clunky with screen readers but I think you get a more professional NAS system overall. I would always go back to their products again.
The WD devices are consumer oriented and not really meant for business use.

Hi all,
I am new to this list because i just found out that this list exists. I am Simon Eigeldinger from Austria. I work in the IT business for a year now in our town hall.
We have some NAS around from 2 manufacturers. 4 newer boxes from QNAP which aren't much accessible on the web interface. and 2 old buffalo terrastations which are pretty old but still work which are more accessible because of the old web interface.
I also had a look at the synology web interface which can be checked out on their website. I kind of liked their interface and since DSM 6.0 i read it is more accessible and pretty well useable with a screen reader.
What do you think?
Greetings and thanks, Simon
