Hi: Actually it was enabled in Server 2003 Standard but disabled in 2003 Enterprise, and has been disabled since. The only thing to think about with the USB audio suggestion is virtual machines. Under VMWare Workstation, there is a virtual audio device present, even one that's compatible with the talking Windows install, but as its not USB there'd have to be some way of turning that on that doesn't involve plugging in a USB audio device. I guess here's an interesting question, how many servers running on actual server class hardware have an audio device built in beyond the PC speaker? I don't think any do, certainly none from the major server manufacturers do. So, I wonder how safe of an assumption it is that if there is an audio device in a server machine, the person who set the server up more likely than not wants it enabled? I presume, I haven't asked anyone, the reason the audio service was disabled in 2003 Enterprise and higher was for performance, but I wonder how much performance that actually gets you and if it wouldn't be a good idea to just enable the audio service by default if audio hardware is detected. I think that service has come disabled since Server 2003. Moss; Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] inplace upgrade to server 2016 Well, for what it is worth, it may have to be for accessibility sake. There would be an extremely few-if I dare say any-of a server SKU that would need/want audio unless it is for accessibility purposes; such as in our world. A great deal of the time, these machines running a server SKU are headless and don't even have an audio device; so a USB based audio device would be required. Nevertheless, I'll chase it and see where it goes. From: Katherine M. Not even for accessibility's sake, though that's always the simplest argument. You never know who is managing a server, I say, and the fact that the audio service is disabled by default, that's assuming the preferences of all admins are the same, and to assume is bad to begin with, doubly so in technology. ________________________________ From: Timothy Spaulding <spaulding@icanbrew.com<mailto:spaulding@icanbrew.com>> Sent: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 8:54:28 AM To: Blind sysadmins list Cc: Katherine M. I'm currently in the process of doing this myself, or I will be. I'm wondering something, though, considering all of the other enhancements, why not make the audio service available by default in Windows 2016/ Would really help with accessibility. ________________________________ From: Blind-sysadmins <blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org<mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org>> on behalf of Ryan Shugart via Blind-sysadmins <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org<mailto:blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org>> Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2017 9:36:09 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Cc: Ryan Shugart Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] inplace upgrade to server 2016 Hi: In general the process should be straight forward. Mount the Server 2016 ISO image, run setup.exe and follow the prompts. You will run into a situation where you'll need to reboot, and when the system comes back up the audio service may not be running, I forget if that setting is preserved. However, assuming it does come up with the audio service running, you can launch Narrator and complete setup. You'll then need to reinstall your primary screen reader, and you're done. Note that while I know it requires sighted assistance, I still think that for a production server its not a good idea to do an in place upgrade as sometimes the installer doesn't do a good job of cleaning up the old operating system. However, if that isn't an option this should work.
