[Blind-sysadmins] free accessible disk immaging solutions

I'm looking for a free way to make a disk immage of my laptop and store it on my desktop. I was considering booting off a live linux cd and using dd to copy the entire hard disk. Any info on accessible ways to do this would be appreciated.
