If you follow best practices and build a good reputation, you will not have any issues. Delivering to Yahoo based servers are probably the worlds worst. It took some tweaking to figure out a method for reliably delivering high volumes of mail to them correctly using Mailman for example. I do offer a service to customers whereby they can use one of my mail servers as a relay with no issues. You just have to ensure you don't allow Spam to get through. Return Path is one good source to review best practices. If you have the drive and ambition you can certainly get it done. There is a trend that a lot of I.T. shops will opt to move things off premises and defer to SaaS. As the one who gets final say in my day job, I will not be doing this. In fact, I have brought back our Exchange environment because of the way Microsoft nickels and dimes you. The industry needs to seriously reconsider what and how things get moved to the ever expensive cloud. I do recommend off site backup solutions. Most importantly, I do everything we possibly can to keep services in house. You just never know when you are going to want your data back in your hands. Most businesses I work with are sending out through a SaaS solution, even if they need to get the mail processed using an on-prem style gateway appliance, they send it out through the SaaS service as the last hop.
Interestingly, I'm not doing that, and I haven't noticed any delivery issues recently. It's a small server primarily used by me. The one instance in the last year or so was most likely due to my provider's network (linode.com) being added to a block list, which they claimed had a poor reputation - and they weren't going to pay the block list company to have the listing removed. However, they contacted the email service provider that was rejecting my messages, and the issue was fully resolved within an hour or two, with no recurrence since then. I do have my SPF, DKIM and DMARC records in place, with outbound messages signed. I check the DMARC reports from time to time in case of issues. For anyone planning to do likewise, my understanding is that the IP address reputation of your hosting or network provider is important, and it may take a while for your domain name to acquire a good reputation with recipients.
