I wish I had control over this, actually ... for the one who owns the network won't even allow the other techies in the house access, never mind her. Evidently what happens when the ISP comes in and sets everything up is that they set up the credentials to something other than the default and then the owner has to call for them. The difficulty though in South Africa apparently is that the word "owner" is taken very seriously, in other words, on paper seriously. So, as a result, she's screwed when it comes to doing anything. I'm so used to just doing stuff and not needing permission ... I'm going to try and set up a VPN and try to get her access to that through active Directory. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Scott Granados Sent: Monday, August 8, 2016 6:14 PM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] router credentials, different countries Sounds like some awful ISP run out of the back of someones garage with a few $30 routers. You could try bunt, bunt for the user name although it’s probably changed. Is there any possibility of switching out the router with something of your own? Other than that, the ubiquity is easy to configure once you’re in it’s just getting in that sounds like the tricky part.

Hi, Sort of an odd sysadmin question. I'm trying to assist my contact from South Africa in getting access to port 2200 on her router. She is completely inept when it comes to technology, so I told her to get the credentials for the router (it's a Ubiquiti router, so easy for us once we have them to walk her through), and then once she had them, I'd have her log in and then walk her through the rest of it. According to her friend, who is very technical, it's common for South African ISPs to change the credentials and keep them away from the users, and if you call to get them, "odd questions" are asked, and she would not know how to properly answer them. Does anybody have any familiarity with this? Are some ISPs really so insecure as to know their customers credentials? And she is also stating something about how the owner of the network won't give her permissions to forward ports, and he is a programmer. So, you wonder what gives. _______________________________________________ Blind-sysadmins mailing list Blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/blind-sysadmins
