Hi, Proofpoint I believe is now what was the commercial arm of Sendmail, so anything you can demonstrate about the SMTP protocol troubleshooting, MTA setup, antispam techniques etc is worth dropping out in the interview. You could download and read that before your interview. I poked around their web site and did not immediately find a free or trial version of their software. IMO, you can practically guarantee yourself a second interview by showing that you've read a company's newsletter and that you can speak confidently about their software. Hi Darragh,
Not at all harsh. I am and have been doing background research. I fired my mail out to the list to get some feedback as my interview is tomorrow and I'm tapping another resource <smiles>
The role is an Application Support Engineer for Proof Point. From what I gather I would be supporting their essentials package. I believe this will be mainly dealing with messaging, encryption and so forth. You're grand I don't know what I'm talking about here either! Haha My conversation with their recruiter on Friday did reveal they are looking for someone and expect the candidate won't have knowledge of their products.
They usefully sent me a couple of topics to gen up on prior to the interview.
My naivety is revealed when I heard network security I immediately went to Wire Shark
I have now reverted to refreshing myself on Linux CLI stuff, the lifecycle of an email DKIM, DMARC, SPF.
Again not harsh in the slightest, all feedback is good feedback ;-)
Thanks, Barry. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Darragh Ó Héiligh Sent: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 10:05 AM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Wire shark accessibility
Hey Barry. I need to preffis this by saying that you know me. I would never consciously be mean or negative..... but.....
You need to read up on Wireshark. Try it out. Try the command line tools. Try alternatives that give some of the functionality such as PortQry and Curport etc.
I know you are highly technical so maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Again, I really don't mean anything bad by this message. It's just friendly advice but when written it comes across as being a lot more harsh than intended.
But If this is a Cyber Security company, I expect that firewalls, packet analysis, networking, vulnerability assessing tools etc are core to what they do so you need to know a lot about things like Wireshark, end point protection, encryption, firewalls and of course, intrusion prevention and intrusion detection. Tools like Nessus aren't accessible but they provide reasonably nice reports. Tools like Wireshark can't really provide reports because it's a realtime port scanning application.
It's funny. I'm writing this like I have a clue of what I'm talking about. I don't! To be completely honest with you, network scanning tools like Wireshark are my downfall. Sometimes I can just about get what I need but often if I'm troubleshooting anything even removely complex there's just too much information to get out of it.
I'd need my screen reader to be incredibly intelligent about the information it gives me. It would need to recognise the graphical representations of what makes certain messages really important then present these in the virtual viewer for easier reading. The virtual viewer would need to automatically refresh with new messages without causing the speech to become sluggish and it should always keep the line I'm on even though it's continually adding more information. It should also present the data in table format so that I can jump easily between columns. Oh, then it should let me easily sort by those columns and filter out the stuff that I don't want by say only showing columns with a particular port number or protocol. All of this would be in the virtual viewer because often packet captures throw out a lot of useless information that's not formatted. Listening to it in a list view without a Braille display and really good Braille reading skills would be much less effective.
There you have it, if anyone knows a scripter, that little wish list for Wireshark would improve my life quite substantially. That's quite sad really isn't it? When a script would improve someones life?
But in all seriousness Barry, take a look at the documentation. Understand how Nessus and Wireshark works because firstly, you can then bluf so that it seems like you know about how it could help this company and secondly, if it ever comes to a situation where you need to do something in these applications, you can more easily ask someone else to do it and give them specific instructions so that they can do it easily and efficiently so that it causes less of a strane.
Just my few thought's for what they are worth. And again, I mean absolutely no disrespect.

Hi,
How is solarwinds for accessibility?
I've an interview coming up for a Cyber Security company and want to gather as much info prior to this.
Thanks, Barry.

I wouldn't know anything about that; I've ever only used it to examine packets. For network monitoring we use solarwinds

Cheers. How about having it email logs/alerts for analysis?

I haven't for a while. From what I remember though you could get something out of it with jaws curser. Due to its nature it's quite hard to get stuff out of it though as there is constantly new info coming in. Regards, Kieran.

Hi all,
Just wondering if any of you folks are using this and if you can comment on it's accessibility?
Thanks, Barry. _______________________________________________ Blind-sysadmins mailing list Blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/blind-sysadmins
