Hi, I usually use ssh keys but on some of my employers systems they are still using passwords. I have been trying to get them to use them but they claim that they don't need them. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of John G. You might have to reconfigure ssh to allow logins as root. But there is a setting to allow root logins with ssh keys but not via password. It's not that you can't log in as root on ubuntu. It's just that it's disabled by default. I'm not sure if there is a way to set the root password to something totally impossible to guess. But you can always set it to something so long it's not practical with one of the many password generator programs out there. There is always a push-pull between convenience and security. One way to prevent hacks is to never put a machine on the internet. Many end-users would find that inconvenient though. Using an ssh key is about the best you can do if you need to update files remotely. On 11/01/2015 08:23 AM, mike wrote:
Hi,
You can still ssh and sftp into root under debian and centos. I am not sure about artch and others but I know Ubuntu doe not even let you log in as root. You can also do this if you are building your own linux from scratch.

Just about every Unix-like system on which I have ever worked inhibits, prohibits, ssh to root.

Hi,
There are some causes like in certain work environments where you cannot have root access for security purposes. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Bill Dengler Sent: Tuesday, August 18, 2015 9:15 PM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Win SCP was Re: TeraTerm

Hi,
I use winscp for ewditing files but am wondering if anyone has gotten winscp to work when you need to have sudo before the file to edit it? -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Brent Harding Sent: Monday, August 17, 2015 10:47 PM To: david.thomas@davidthetechguy.com; Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] TeraTerm
Yep, you can hook WinSCP up to use other editors like Ed Sharp, or just use the one it has built in. It probably works better for longer
Bill things than Teraterm and nano do. I did cobble together an interesting way to get files up there with Tt though. If you get the package lrzsz on a VPS or something, you can use SZ or RZ and then use the Z-modem option in transfer under the file menu to get the job done if one didn't have WinSCP or something around.
I'm surprised that kind of thing even ran over SSH though.

I have been using Win SCP and putty with NVDA with great success. I know this is a cobbled together solution, but I have found this to be very officient, and able to allow me to get the job done.

I think something broke after Jaws 12 or so. Teraterm wasn't bad with the simple modification I found on one of the Cavi archives on the net until you try to apply that to 13 and up, and it kind of falls apart. I think we probably have to find a different way to edit files on the remote machine though because we can't stay in Jaws 12 forever just for TT to work good. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Matzura" <sm@noisynotes.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Monday, August 17, 2015 3:31 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] TeraTerm
That's what I do with TT now. I'm trying to get away from that mess. TT often loses cursor track. I'm noticing the same thing with PUTTY.

How much better is putty with JAWS than TeraTerm? I tried it, and found I have to read every line manuallly once I'm connected to the other system. On Mon, 17 Aug 2015 18:33:50 +0000, you wrote:
Go ahead and check out putty or secure CRT. Putty is free, Secure CRT is $99ish and has a jaws script that works with it. Putty is very good though, supports ssh and lots of other protocols including serial. > On Aug 17, 2015, at 2:25 PM, Steve Matzura <sm@noisynotes.com> wrote: > > Is there a better solution for ssh-ing than this?
