Hi, One of my problems at the time with screen readers in server core was I didn't have any sound output on the system (Vmware ESX). At some point I will be able to get a new system and set it up with a virtual server - at the moment that isn't possible due to my system spec :(. Windows Remote Shell sounds interesting, I didn't use it originally when I tested it. I remember being disappointed that there was no Powershell support, as I was going to use the remote cmdlets capability to manage the server. R2 does have Powershell. Thanks. Andrew. Hi: I've not played with this, but there is Windows Remote Shell, which is Microsoft's version of SSH. I can't think of any reason why the client wouldn't be accessible, so in theory you could connect that way. Server Core in 2008 doesn't support Powershell, I wonder if 2008R2 server core does. If so, that is another option for remote access, as Powershell V2 supports running cmdlets remotely out of the box. All of this is in theory right now because as I said I've not heard of anyone actually deploying server core in production. I think for now its just too limiting. Despite it being good practice to limit what each server does, a lot of places like to cram as many things onto one server as possible to save on costs. One company I know sticks a server in each branch office that's a DC, file server, print server, DHCP, proxy, SMS distribution point, etc. all rolled into one. Server Core can handle some of those things, but not all. As I mentioned before I'd like to see a version of Exchange that could be installed in Server Core, I think that'd be very helpful and make the product even more stable. Just out of curiosity Andrew, have you actually tried installing a screen reader in Server Core? There is still a GUI in that environment, and some GUI programs run so its possible one or the other screen reader might work. Do you know if Narrator is part of Server Core? Another thought is while JAWS or Window-Eyes might not work, something like NVDA might since its less dependant on system components than the big two are, and NVDA would be enough to work at the command line. Hi, That is certainly the case for many of the tools such as the AD components. However, not sure about tools like netsh, cscript etc. Unfortunately there is no SSH access, which I feel is the real downfall of this operating system. Also, there aren't short ways of doing things in core either, for example, when I used it in a test environment, I had to run scripts to do things like enable remote desktop etc. Here is the command I used to enable remote desktop: cscript C:\Windows\System32\SCregEdit.wsf /AR 0 To activate the product run the following: cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -ato Good isn't it?! Not! Andrew. Andrew is correct. However, a Server core machine can be administered remotely from a workstation using standard GUI or commandline tools, which would be accessible. In theory you could do an unattended install and then access the machine remotely. Note I say in theory, because I've never actually used a server core machine, and I don't know anyone that's deployed them in production yet. Hi, Not with JFW or WE due to the actual small size of the install and what has been taken out. Core seems to currently only have use as a domain controller/DHCP/DNS server, or as a HyperV platform. In R2 they will be adding more IIS support in Core. Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Dave Sent: 20 September 2009 15:38 To: 'Blind sysadmins list' Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] server 2008 core?
