I'd agree. I'd much rather ssh in to someone's box and take care of an issue than try some sort of remote desktop kind of thing. Thankfully, I haven't had to do end user support since the 1990S so that's a good thing. I remember having to do end user support, I had about 100,000 dial in customers all using windows 3.1 and 95. It really hurt, still gives me bad flashbacks.;) ----- Original Message ----- From: "John G. I use a linux/Windows dual-boot machine for my workstation but everybody else uses linux. All of our servers are linux. I do occasionally do have problems supporting the linux GUI. For instance, a professor asked me to install skype on his machine. I got it installed but his microphone didn't work. He could hear his callers but they couldn't hear him. And I have no idea how to configure a microphone in gnome. I usually use Windows for most of my mail. But I do all kinds of other things in gnome. Answer the occasional email, edit code, etc. Problems are pretty rare and as far as I know, everything is working except for that professor's microphone. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Hodgson" <Andrew.Hodgson@allpay.net> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Friday, October 02, 2009 11:04 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Windows 7 warning
Hi,
I still would be a bit apprehensive about working for a Linux only shop atm. I still don't think the access to the GUI is quite there yet, especially on some of the more Enterprise distros like RedHat.
Luckily in my job I don't need to access other people's workstations, however when I did I used Narrator or System Access. I can use live servers with just the Windows magnifier, and install WindowEyes on some of the test boxes to verify what I'm doing, so it isn't that bad.
Thanks. Andrew.

Or, you could run an operating system like a Unix flavor that allows you to remotely administer everything.;)
I had interviewed with Dream Works Interactive and every desktop there used Linux, they run an entirely Microsoft free environment. Well Linux or Macs in the artistic areas.

By heck! I can think of a few guys here who will be absolutely green with envy just at having JAWS everywhere and accessible with a dongle.

The Houses of the offices of the Oireachtas is like the main government offices in Ireland.
I'm employed by a company who are contracted by this department to manage their IT.
We've a huge infrastructure here from around 10 server rooms and more coms rooms that I have been able to keep track of. It's a fantastic place to work as the environment is very large but very flexable.
We've around 94 physical servers with a good chunk of other virtual servers on top of that and around 2100 workstations. Every machine on the network has Jaws installed so when I remember to bring my dongle with me there's never a PC or server I cant access.
Oroktass is loosely how you would pronounce it.
