Hi, Cacti sounds promissing plus it looks like I'll be able to get it up and running on my raspberry pi which will be better than having a full blown system running it. I'm assuming you can get at the text as well as all the graphs it creates? I was thinking of buying a different router that supports snmp then just selling it after I was done with it but wasn't sure on the best monitoring solution so thanks for that. Cheers, Ben. What about buying a cheap router with SNMP capability and running cacti?
You can get a Mikrotek router for under 50 bucks that would do the trick.

Hi,
That sounds interesting, but afaik PHP isn't capable of doing this on its own; it needs some tool to give it the data then it can put it into a pretty web interface. Could be wrong though. Cheers, Ben.

Hi,
I don't know much about php myself. I do no that the scripts will send you e-mails when you reach a cirtain amount. It also shows you the bandwith used per ipaddress on the network. Also it shows you how much you have used for a lifetime of that script.

That would be great thanks, but are there any spaces in the code?

Hi,
Can anyone suggest a simple way of monitoring bandwidth used by specific devices on a network? I know that some top end consumer routers support snmp so I could use this in combination with some form of monitoring tool on another box, but mine doesn't so it's not an option. The solution I was thinking of was to turn off dhcp on my router, configure a box with 2 nic cards and bridge them using ics - one that connects to

router with a static and one that runs dhcp and is also connected to the router, there by forcing all the trafic on the network to go through my box. I know that products like ISA can do this, but this is just a home environment so I'm thinking installing something like 2008 to get ISA would be a bit overkill.
We're moving to an ISP where we'll have a limited amount of transfer a month and whilst I don't really want a big brother type environment where I can see exactly what everyones doing, I would like something that I can use for a couple of months so that I can get a rough idea of how much we use and what devices are responsible for the bulk of our usage.
Does anyone have any suggestions? All thoughts are welcome.
Cheers, Ben.
