Speaking of which, what about the look of the application; doesn't matter often to us, though I know some in the sighted world who refuse to use certain applications because they don't like the UI. How do you make an application both functional and visually pleasing? -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Steve Matzura Sent: Wednesday, December 3, 2014 1:46 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Testing tools Are you saying you want to test screenreaders and magnifiers to determine their level of access? In other words, you want to find out how much access you can get with these programs? That's a hard one, because first you have to start with a standard of accessibility--something that's supposed to be accessible by any screenreader or magnifier worth its salt, as they say. For Web pages, start with the World-Wide Web Consortium, or "W3C" as it's mostly known. They have established standards, although most Website that claim accessibility don't follow those standards, and a few even go beyond them. But the W3C is supposedly the "gold standard" of acessibility rules and rule-making for anything on the Web. For Windows software I do not think there is a standard, except to make sure that all program controls use standard Windows controls--combo boxes, edit fields, multki-state check boxes, radio buttons, single-state buttons, etc. There are 35 such standard controls. If the software you are testing does not use them, using graphic symbols that require mouse-clicks instead, that's points off as far as I'm concerned. Hope this helps.
