Re: [Blind-sysadmins] booting from the CD on a Dell PE
Andrew et al, thanks for all of the help installing Win 2003 on my Dell
PE 2900. OK I think I got a handle on it but I have one question. If I
use the two CDs from Dell Plus the Windows 2003 CD I end up with a 10GB
C partition. At what point in the installation process can I override
the default partition size?
Thanks
Frank

Hi,
Yeah those will be fine on the DVD ISO of 6.1 booted from a USB DVD.
You may want to download the PowerEdge updates as well to get the
firmware upgrades.
Thanks.
Andrew.

Andrew, thanks, yeah I think a DVD is the way to go. Can these older
beasts (1900, 2900) even boot from a USB DVD? I might try that.
Frank

Hi,
Yes, if you use the CDs now there are two Dell CDs you need to use:
- The build and update utility disk which is the bootable CD.
- The Dell Consoles and Agent disk which has the Dell OpenManage agent
on it. You can skip using this disk if you choose not to install the
OpenManage setup files during the install phase.
Installing using the Dell stuff now really needs a DVD (even a USB DVD
is better than using the CDs). 5.3 was the last version to have a CD
release, 5.5 is the most recent release of the tool for the older
servers (Poweredge 2650, 1750 etc), and there is now 6.1 for the newer
gen servers.
Andrew.

Scott, thanks After running through the OS install CD utility the Dell
installer asks for the following CD:
dell open server 5.3
I can't seem to find that anywhere on the support and driver page. I
have always been used to merely putting in the build CD and then having
it ask for the Windows CD and the rest is history but this is a new one
on me.
Thanks
Frank

F12 is the same I think it's the second option but not 100% certain.
Can
check tomorrow at work though.

Hi,
You can alter the partition size on the screen before you have to enter in the information such as the registration and key information. Earlier versions used a 12GB partition as default, later versions seem to decrease that for some crazy reason. With all the updates etc, you really need 20 GB minimum, I tend to go for 30GB.
Thanks.
Andrew.
