Hi all, This has been puzzling me since yesterday. I visited a person’s house to set up their emails in Outlook. I created 3 profiles to house each mail account, as this is the way they are used to it being set up on 2003. There are two BT accounts and one GMAIL account. All the accounts are using IMAP. No accounts are able to send mail, but can receive fine. I have checked Windows Firewall, and even turne dit off. I have removed AVG that another person installed in case for some odd reason this was blocking. I’ve verified that the BT settings match those found on, http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917/~/what-are-the-settings... I can confirm that the Outlook 2010 test in the email setup window completes by connecting to the outgoing server and sending a test mail. However, when we try and send an email to anyone the mails don’t’ go. I can confirm that another party outside of this scenario who shares the GMAIL mailbox can connect fine using Outlook 2010. I can also confirm that the BT IMAP accounts are sending and receiving mails and displaying the list of folders correctly on IOS. Is there something I could be missing? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Barry.
Thanks for the detailed overview, what ports on Gmail are being used? What certificates are being used on both incoming and outgoing servers?

Have you check the port being used on the outgoing server. Recently, I had an issue where I could not send email from my university. The default port for SMTP of 25 was being used. After some checking I changed the outgoing port to 587. The result is that I can email from anywhere. Maybe it is something as simple as changing the outgoing port number. I am using Office 2013. Make sure this one is ticked when you go to more settings: My outgoing server SMTP requires authentication. As other mentioned already, double check on SSL and TLS. I believe it is SSL 993 and TLS 587 for Gmail account. Make sure there is no software like Stunnel, highly doubt someone will use such program at home but who knows. Malware could be culprit as well Is email going out with other client software like Thunderbird etc.? -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Barry Toner Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2015 12:59 PM To: 'Blind sysadmins list (blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org)' <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Outlook 2010 not sending mails Hi all, This has been puzzling me since yesterday. Hello Barry Try setting up IMAP to use port 143 with no encryption. If you want to try SSL then see if port 993 does the trick. As for SMTP, try 587 or 25 as the port number without SSL enabled. If you want to use SSL, then you might have to see if port 465 will work for you. I also think you may want to try ensuring that your incoming and outgoing servers use the same authentication. Good luck. Imap has nothing to do with sending mail. Sending and receiving mail are completely separate functions. If the problem is in sending mail, there is no point in messing with the imap settings. My gmail settings for sending are to use smtp.googlemail.com for the server, 465 for the port, ssl for encryption, and normal password for authentication. These settings have worked for about 15 years. I doubt that google has changed them. Many ISPs block traffic on port 25. The firewall at their switch just doesn't allow traffic through on port 25 because there are too many spam bots using that port. I have AT&T at home and I can't send anything through port 25. But at least with gmail, it is not a problem because the correct port is 465 anyway. You can check if port 25 is being blocked by using telnet to connect to the mail server on port 25. I will bet donuts that it won't work. There used to be a tip sheet on the Microsoft web site on how to do this. I haven't been a Windows user for years but I'd find that page by accident all the time when looking for the commands to send a mail message via telnet. But you probably won't even get as far as getting connected to the smtp server. On 09/21/2015 08:03 AM, vic.pereira@ssc-spc.gc.ca wrote:

I tried telnetting to smtp.googlemail.com on port 25 and while I did get connected, after I typed in the EHLO command, it said I had to issue a startTLS command. So then I changed the settings on my gmail account from using ssl/tls on port 465 to use startTLS on port 25 and it worked. So I think you can use either ssl/tls on port 465 or startTLS on port 25. One other thing to remember, note that some, many, carriers block port 25 for end clients. You may need to use 587 (submit) or ask your carrier to unblock 25 (probably not necessary). Generally 465 or 587 will work around the smtp blocks. Thanks

Yeah, I think I already said that in my original message where I suggested testing it with telnet. You will be able to tell if your ISP is blocking traffic on port 25 by telnetting to smtp.googlemail.com on port 25. If you can't even get a connection, your ISP is probably blocking the port. Or easier still, just user ssl/tls on port 465. There is one reason to use port 25 though. It is considered old-fashioned to use a second port for ssl for a service. Why do all services use 2 ports? 80 and 443 for web, 143 and 993 for receiving mail, 25 and 465 for sending. It's inefficient. So it is considered preferable to use the original port with startTLS. It is going to take decades to straighten that out if it ever does get straightened out. On 09/21/2015 01:33 PM, Scott Granados wrote:

Hi, One other thing is that I think you need to deal with the accounts on an individual basis, rather than having both accounts there. There is an issue if you send via Google's Smart Host and don't use Google's email address, and I am wondering if the wrong account is being used somehow. I would always strip out a configuration like this and identify when the issue happens, treat the accounts separately and get one working fully first, then move onto the next account once you have done this. Thanks. Hi, Thank you for everyone's feedback. I googled "Outlook problems on Windows 10" and got quite a number of hits on forums where other people had the same problem but with no solution but eventually I found one which said it was fairly common for some system files to be currupt after updating to Windows 10 and suggested running "sfc /scannow" and then restart. This had worked for the forum person and when I tried it on the clients laptop it worked there too. This is the web page where I found the answer: http://www.msoutlook.info/question/cannot-send-after-windows-10-upgrade Barry Toner "To leave the world a bit better; to know that one life has breathed easier because of you. Hi all,
This has been puzzling me since yesterday. I visited a person's house to set up their emails in Outlook. I've verified that the BT settings match those found on, http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917/~/what-are-the-se ttings-for-outgoing-and-incoming-bt-email-servers%3F I can confirm that the Outlook 2010 test in the email setup window completes by connecting to the outgoing server and sending a test mail. However, when we try and send an email to anyone the mails don't' go.

Hi,
One other thing is that I think you need to deal with the accounts on an individual basis, rather than having both accounts there. There is an issue if you send via Google's Smart Host and don't use Google's email address, and I am wondering if the wrong account is being used somehow. I would always strip out a configuration like this and identify when the issue happens, treat the accounts separately and get one working fully first, then move onto the next account once you have done this.
Thanks. Andrew.

But I don't think you can turn off encryption entirely.

Try setting up IMAP to use port 143 with no encryption.
Good luck.

Since the test emails go through it suggests the account settings may be correct, and that the trouble could be something else. Do messages get stuck in the outbox, and do you get an error when trying to send? John On 2015-09-19 1:58 PM, Barry Toner wrote:

I've come across a quirk in Outlook 2010 and 2013. Sometimes a message gets stuck in the Outbox. Opening it and sending it again sometimes gets it going. If that doesn't work, then I find deleting the address or addresses in the To, CC and BCC fields then re-entering them at times will work. I have not looked into this too thoroughly to determine what might cause a message not to be sent when it is sitting in the Outbox.
