I hope someone can shed some light on a potential problem I am shortly going to run into. We are currently running a fileserver that holds user home folders as well as shared documents. The server also hosts the license servers for jfw and zoomtext along with some other similar license servers. unfortunately, it was originally purchased with only 1 hard drive which is running out of space. The server is also almost 4 years old. The server is our primary domain controller, dns server, and vpn server. We recently purchased a new server, with raid 5 disks, more ram, more processors and the like. I have set it up to take over some of the functions of the older server. I want to transfer the roll of file server to it and transfer the vpn roll over to it as well. I believe all I have to do is change the port forwarding within our router to forward port 1723 to the new server. The question is though, if I do this, how will the client computers still be able to access the license servers on the old server. in other words, client computers will access their files on the new server via a vpn connection, but if so, I assume they will no longer be able to receive a license authorization from (say jfw license server) from the old server. I hope this makes sense, and I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I also am hoping that I don't have to move the license servers to the new server if at all possible. Many thanks. Phil
Hi, When the VPN connection is established, do the users get an IP address of your network or some other IP address (giving a connection to the server only)? Is this Small Business Server you are dealing with? Thanks. The clients are given an ip address on the same subnet that the server is on. the old server has an ip address of 192.168.1.90. the new server has 192.168.1.200 the vpn address pool begins at 192.168.1.61 through 192.168.1.85 i think. we are running windows 2003 enterprise. at the moment, ras is configured on the old server. I configured it on the new server, but haven't set the router to forward vpn requests to that server yet. The old server is our dns server at the moment too. Maybe there isn't a problem, just in my mind. perhaps I don't fully understand how vpn completely works. Many thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Hodgson" <andrew@hodgsonfamily.org> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Friday, April 03, 2009 10:38 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] jfw/zoomtext and vpn

Hi, It should be fine. You may need to put the DNS server of the old server in the address of the VPN server, in the RAS system, so that it hands out the correct address. Thanks. Philip to go in more explaination of VPN servers or VPN technology at a high level. think of vPN as a box within a box. The life cycle is below which should explain it. 1. Client PC breaks up the data into datagrams (box1). 2. When the datagram (box1) is about to be sent across the internet, the VPN software puts Box1 into another box for this example called box2. Either some or all the details are hidden from view from the public. 3. The box2 is sent across the internet to your VPN Server. 4. The VPN open box2 and takes out box1 (original datagram). 5. Your router inspected the address where box1 (datagram) is meant to go to. 6. If the address is known about, then it will direct the packet to the right location. 7. Otherwise it is destoryed and a message is sent back to the client. The above process is repeated when the data is sent back to the client. I have kept away from explaining in networking terms because I don't know your level of network knowledge. As long as the network traffic knows how to get to a server, then the data will get there. What your server does with it is a different story. Of course you have to take into account of any other deveices befor eit gets to server stopping the traffic from getting to the destination. If the last paragraph sounds like mud, well that is networking for you. Sean
