advice wanted: Reliable budget VPS providers? - Mozilla Thunderbird
Hello Everyone. We could really do with a VPS with root access for a project. Dedicated servers are not a requirement. I've been taking a look and have found that OVH and FastHosts have pretty decent VPS offerings. Hostinger don't seem bad either. The problem I have are the reviews for all of the above companies. OVH has the worst rating on trust pilot. FastHosts seem to be the highest rated out of the lot. Has anyone used the above companies for serious VPS use? If so, how have you found their downtime policy? I need a reliable server that isn't going to go down every 2 minutes. If you haven't used the above companies, are there companies you would recommend? Comments welcome on the quality of experience when contacting support. If I can get a decent VPS for between £4 to £8 a month, I'll be happy. FastHosts's VPS with 2GB of ram and 80GB SSD at £6 sounds very appealing. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading, Mo.

Mine is hosted at linode.com, a service that has been very reliable since I started using it (probably circa late 2014, if I remember correctly). I have rarely needed to contact their technical support. They offer ssh access to the console of your instance in addition to a command line administration interface, alongside a Web-based interface. There is a broad selection of Linux distributions available. Also, they notify you well in advance if the instance needs to be shut down for migration to new hardware. If I remember rightly, you can schedule the down time. Reliability has been excellent. I only reboot the instance occasionally for kernel upgrades (or for larger system upgrades).
Hi Jason, I run a cluster of physical servers where we sale VPS/VM space. We don't have to reboot our host nodes as they are upgraded via a kernel in which it moves it's self in while in the running state. If I can ever offer anything to you, let me know. Hi, That Fasthosts VPS sounds really appealing as I am right now spending £20 per month for similar and the company I used has changed hands so don't feel like sticking around. I used Linode in the past but liked my own Debian install and that is hard to do with their setup. That was a solid system. A lot of the cheaper VPS hosts run off the shelf installs and aren't as reliable, it doesn't matter to me as much now so may take a look at this Fasthosts offer. I used Fasthosts a long time ago at work for some Windows dedicated hosts. Gandi would be my other option as I have a lot with them and they have solid hosting options. I especially like their web hosting which runs on containers and is a good middle ground between VPS and managed web hosting. Linode allow you to upload your own file system image, which could be an alternative. I suppose another option would be to boot into their rescue environment and run Debootstrap to install a custom Debian system.

I've used their domain registration service, but not their hosting services. For domain registration, they have been reliable. I manage my own DNS, so I don't rely on Gandi for that aspect.
Hi, Thanks for the info re upload image option on Linode. Its there on Digital Ocean as well. I used it in the past because on my current VPS I didn't like the old Debian images, maybe the Linode/Gandi/Digital Ocean Debian images are small enough for me to just use those and save me the bother. I have done a custom image on Linode in the past using the rescue environment and writing the ISO to a temporary disk. I think the upload option is fairly new. Thanks.
