Hi all, Has anyone been using this within Windows with either Window Eyes or JAWS? Anyone got or willing to write-up a tutorial or record a podcast for the complete newbie? I've just started CBT Nuggets vmware series, but don't want to get too far a-head to find that it will not work under Windows XP with the above screenreaders. Hi, I did have issues with Vmware ESX 2.0 under Jaws 8.0 and Windows XP. I did write to the JFW list, and some people said there may be issues with the intercepter driver not running in the Vmware session. This now may be fixed in JFW 9.0, however, I have not had time to use it, and ESX 3.0 is now of course out. The workstation product may work better, I was using the Vmware ESX server which installs on a machine as it's own operating system, then gives you like a console with all the running images. Hi: I use VMWare ESX 3.02 at my job. There are issues with Window-Eyes 6.1 if you RDP into a VMWare session, the VM will blue screen. You don't appear to have these issues from the console. From the management perspective, using either JAWS or Window-Eyes its doable, just be prepared to use your mouse pointer a lot. The one stumbling block that could get you right away is there are what appear to be buttons across the top of the screen for summary, events, etc. You can't tab and press space on these buttons, if you do nothing will happen. You can route your mouse pointer and click, and things will work fine. With Window-Eyes, I get a lot of OSM corruption in the VIC, I've heard this can also happen with JAWS. Hope this helps. Hi Vincent: Correct. If you RDP into a VM, and fire up Window-Eyes, you will get a blue screen. Perhaps not right away, but within five minutes of use. GW-Micro is aware of the problem, but is currently at a loss as to why its happening. The problem originates from within the DLL they use to provide video intersept support for the RDP session. They're working on a fix, but there is a possibility they might not be able to fix it without help from VMWare, AKA the problem could lie in how VMWare uses and calls video drivers. As I said its too soon to tell for sure. By console, I'm referring to the VIC. If you go into the VIC (VMWare Infrastructure Client), right click on the VM and open console, you can work with Window-Eyes without an issue. Your problem there is that you can't get sound redirected through the VIC, so hopefully you can get speech some other way such as a serial synth. Hope this helps. Hi Andrew: I thought you could redirect, but I might be wrong, in all honesty I've not messed with that part of the VIC in a while so I'll have to check when I get into work and get back to you. I agree the RDP issue is a bummer, my company is moving pretty much all of our servers to VMs over the next few months, and as the primary VMWare guy there I'll have a huge part to play in that. So one way or another a solution will be found. Hello again Andrew: I went and looked, and unfortunately it appears that you're right, I cannot redirect serial ports to the local workstation, just floppy and CD drive access. I can redirect serial ports to named pipe and output to file, but I don't think that would help in my situation. Bummer. Hi, Actually I have just been asked to get Vmware back on the table (or some other virtualisation technology, but it will probably be Vmware for application compatibility reasons). The first project is to virtualise around 4 training systems that have very light use. In your experience, what sort of kit would I need to do this? I am looking at a quad core machine with 4GB of RAM to start with, and can expand that to 8GB if I get heavier use on the systems. Hi Andrew: I think that machine should get you started. Here are things to think about. What OS will the VMs run? If Windows XP, I'd give them 256MB of ram each, if WS2003 I'd give 512MB and if Vista or 2008 I'd give 1GB each. I find the best practice is to start out on the low end, as far as allocating virtual resources go, and then bump the resources up when you start running into problems. How will people be accessing these machines, AKA by RDPing into them or accessing them another way? If the app you're virtualizing is a backend app and doesn't have its own interface, it usually won't use as much resources. If these machines will be identical, you can build a template VM, then just copy the template three times, four if you want a copy that will always be clean. If you go with VMWare, do you know if you'll be using their free server or ESX server? Hope this helps for a start. Hi, Actually the servers I want to put on the VM are running Windows Server 2003, SQL Server 2005, IIS, Apache, and MySQL. There will be initially two servers on that machine with 4GB of RAM, and then possibly more afterwards. They will only get around 50 hits a day. Assuming you don't have a lot of automated CPU intensive stuff like batch reports going on in the background, set each VM to 512MB or possibly 768MB of ram and you'll be fine.
