How to troubleshoot a windows 7 machine without the end-users password
Hi folks, I'm just wondering if it's possible to log-in to say an Admin account if you can't get access to a particular users account details? I'm curious because if there's confidential information on a laptop how would a hardware supplier gain access for troubleshooting on another account. Thanks, Barry. Hi, It all depends on what you want to do, at work we would use an admin account or change the user password as a last resort by manipulating the SAM database (though if using EFS this will break the EFS encrypted files). Hi, Not if you didn't have access to run the command in the first place. The best approach really depends on exactly what you're wanting to do; I'm a hardware junky, so most of my troubleshooting can be done outside of an os or from bootable cd's/dvd's for example. Cheers, Ben. On 2/19/13, Isaac <bigikemusic@gmail.com> wrote:

Ryan, To be honest this came to light because a company we've had horrible service from in work has had my brand new work laptop for over 6 weeks, all because of a short in the headphone socket that was DOA. They are making excuses left, right, and centre. I provided their engineer the Truecrypt password, but wouldn't provide him with my user account password because it had confidential documents on it. Granted they could crack the password but there was no way I was leaving myself open to openly handed this over as it would breach confidentiality. Hi, In this situation I would have just booted a Linux distro from DVD / USB in order to test the functionality of the socket. As a side note, a laptop motherboard shouldn't take 6 weeks; if you have the part to hand its a 2.5/3 hour job at the most. Cheers, Ben. On 2/22/13, Barry Toner <Barry.Toner@clanmil.org.uk> wrote:
