network cables, do you make your own?
Hi listers, ok, if this is inappropriate, you have all the right to boot me off this list. But I write this because I'm just burning with curiosity, I have no other visually impaired person to ask, and wanted to know if any visually impaired people can do this in someway or another. So, do you make your own ethernet cables? I'm doing N+ and I know we'd have a problem when it comes to putting the colours in the right pairs but what about cutting, crimping etc? Unfortunately I'm studying this thing by myself so no practical assistance here. Hence one of the many reasons for asking. regards,
This is a great question. Personally, I haven't figured a way to do this but I am sure there must be a way. I generally buy the cables premade which I know isn't perfect but it's not a bad work around. You can buy patches in just about every custom length inexpensively now and have them drop shipped where ever you need them. I'd like to hear more about this as well if someone has done this successfully. -----Original Message----- From: Zameer Mahomed Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 6:25 PM To: Blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] network cables, do you make your own? Cutting and crimping, no problem. Getting colors lined up, forget it. Monoprice is my go-to source for decent, cheap, cables. On Tue, July 12, 2011 18:25, Zameer Mahomed wrote:

Yeah, I don't know how a blind person could put the ends on network cables. Maybe somebody has figured out a way but I would think that would require sighted assistance. But you can't always buy cables. I ran my own network cables in my house, fished them up through the walls and all that. But when it came time to put the ends on, I had to hire someone to do it. Except for putting the ends on the cables, I built a gigabit network in my house. I ran the cables myself. It was kind of funny actually. I was walking around with this giant drill with a drill bit about 2 feet long. That made my wife a little nervous. "What are you going to do with that?" she asked. I had to drill through the ceiling of the basement to get the cables into the first floor rooms. But I measured very carefully and never drilled a hole where it didn't belong. And now we have a gig network in our house. ----- Original Message ----- From: "White, Matt" <matt.bsa@wh1t3.net> To: <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 10:53 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] network cables, do you make your own?

How easy did you find that John? Did you have any diy type experience before that? I assume that you just drop the cable down, but how do you know exactly where its going to drop to? Cheers, Ben. On 13/07/2011, John G. Heim <jheim@math.wisc.edu> wrote:

The only experience I had running cables was taking a shop class in electrical wiring in high school. That and helping my father rmake electrical repairs our house when I was a kid. But I figured it couldn't be too hard. I mostly used an unbent wire coat hanger as a fish tool. You can unbend a wire coat hanger and then make a short j at one end. Attach the network cable to the fish tool by stripping off some of the coating and sticking it through the j kind of like threading a needle. Then bend over the wires of the network cable and put tape over the connection. So you've made two interlocking hooks that are reinforced with tape. That should allow you to pull the cable through a pretty small hole without it coming off. Then you just drill a hole in the ceiling or wall you want to go through and stick the straight end of the fish tool through. Its best to have somebody on the other side to pull on it as it comes through but it isn't a necessity. If you're going up through the ceiling of the basement, measure carefully from some landmark so that you can come up between the walls and between the studs. I found a braille tape measure a necessity for this. Then you can drill a small hole in the wall that should allow you to grab the fish tool ccoming up through the basement. I found it much easier to push the fish tool up through the ceiling of the basement rather than trying to stick the fish ool into the hole in the floor between the walls. The most valuable tool of all is patience. It can be difficult to find the fish tool after you've stuck it through some hole especially if its inside the wall and you have only a small hole in the wall to work through. There were times when I spent hours doing a single connection like that. If I got tired, I'd give up and try again the next day. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ben Mustill-Rose" <bmustillrose@gmail.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 8:52 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] network cables, do you make your own?

To add to this. I had the same experience growing up. My father was an electrician so we worked on a lot of projects together. When running wire say between floors or from a main floor to a basement another method is to use fishing line and a sinker. Drill a small hole in the top, lower down the line and sinker and let the sinker fall down to the lower level. Then have someone up top yank on the line and cause the sinker to bounce on the lower floor between the walls. You can use your hearing to find it's exact location that way. I've seen sited and non sited folks use the same method. Once you pinpoint the sound drill the hole and fish out the line as mentioned by John earlier, install the plate and bob's your uncle. My story is the same as John's story. When I wired my house, I used a friend to help me with crimping the ends of the cables. Also friends are good for sharing the cost of a role of cat-5 or cat-6.
