Good morning listers, I have a system which needs rebuilt and I have access to an xp pro cd. What is the best way to install without sighted assistance? I want to reformat the drive and start over. Thanks Rick
Well, I don't know if its the best way but the way I install Windows XP is via the unattended sourceforge project. See: http://unattended.sourceforge.net/ It is kind of a lot to set up but once you have it, it's real easy. I don't even worry about getting viruses because if I suspect any problem, I just re-install Windows. You just boot from a CD and come back 40 minutes later to a fresh install. You can even automatically re-install your software. I have it automatically re-install nvda, foobar, etc. The one thing I never figured out is how to automatically install jaws, much less re-authorize. But I did set it up to automatically re-install nvda so after the 40 minutes I come back to a talking computer. You need a samba server and access to DNS though. I already had all that when I started setting it up so it was easy for me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Watson" <rwatson@eckeranch.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Friday, December 11, 2009 9:50 AM Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] unattended install of windows xp

Hello, For Xp installs I use NLite. I've not heard of this unattended project when i get some time i'll check it out, that would be very helpful! Dave. On 12/11/09, Greg B. <gbobo@woh.rr.com> wrote:

So what the project at http://unattended.net does is boot from a linux CD and then it does a network install of Windows in a DOS emulator. I made a speakup kernel for the boot CD so I have a talking Windows XP install. You could have it ask all the same questions a typical Windows install asks but I generally just put everything in the unattended config file. I actually started working on a script that would have built an iso for a bootable CD that did the same thing. The idea was that you'd install this package on your linux machine, put your Windows XP CD in the drive, run a script and it would build an iso image that you could use to do a talking install. But when I found out that Windows 7 wasn't going to allow you to install from a Dos command line, I gave up. No point in going through all that work for an obsolete version of Windows. It might not have worked anyway because even with using compressed file systems, it might not have fit on a CD. I think it probably would have worked though because if you gzip a Windows install CD, it get pretty small. On Dec 11, 2009, at 2:25 PM, David Mehler wrote:
